  • HP Playback not working?

I’ve just bought Special Edition Vol. 1. All installed and showing in Vienna Instruments plugin within Finale v26 on Mac (Sierra).

I also installed the HP playback file, as per instructions. This is selected with HP playback as VSL - Special Edition (no other option).

As a test, I set up a basic violin patch which plays. Different styles set to respond to keyswitch. Dynamics and articulations appear to be observed, as are smart shapes. However, text expressions in the score such as pizz and arco, don’t affect playback.

I’m assuming that I’m missing something obvious here, maybe another setting? Are the HP definitions wrong maybe?

Any advice wold be most welcome to get me going. I’ve been working with Finale and Garritan since the nineties and hope this will be a step forward.

  • Hello Roderick!

Pizzicato and arco articulation changes work fine here. Please check the following things.

    - In the Human Playback Preferences, do you have the "VSL - Special Edition" set loaded?

    - In the Vienna Instruments player, do you have one of the matrices loaded the came with the Special Edition content?

    - Did you add the "pizz." and "arco" expressions from the Finale expression tool that are listed under "Technique Text"?

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hi Andy and thank you. For replying.

As you can see from the attachments, I’ve set up a basic string orchestra from the patch menu.

I have imported the HP preferences, as you can see.

I have now also loaded the keyswitch definitions from your site. I’ve simply added a label (pizz/arco) to remember what they are. The correct sounds then play. A normal pizz or pizzicato in the score has no effect.

    Am I missing something here?

    Thanks.

  • Hello Roderick!

Thanks for the screenshots. I can see that you have started to build custom matrices in Vienna Instruments. As mentioned in my last post, you will need the matrices that come with the Special Edition content loaded. Otherwise the keyswitches from the Human Playback Preferences can't work correctly. These matrices can be loaded from the MATRIX tab. I have attached a screenshot for you.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Andi — apologies. I just re-read your post and noticed your reference to the matrix menu. I'd been creating my own matrix from presets and not picked up on the need to do otherwise.

Using the matrix menu, all is well. To start with it wasn't as some of the expression had 'Dump' selected under playback but when removed, they play ok. I've only tried strings but feel sure others will also work.

Is there a list anywhere of the text expressions which can be used to control the various matrix cells?

    Regards,

    Roderick

  • Hello Roderick!

If you open the Finale Human Playback menu with the "VSL - Special Edition" preferences loaded, you can see a list of all articulation changes.

    Best,
    Andi
