    Dear All

    Apologies as I have been out of the VSL scene for sometime now but wondered if things had moved on.  I couldn't see a thread on this topic but as we're in the age of Cloud and all things "software" is it possible yet to use VSL with the soft e-licenser from Steinberg?

    Or is another cloud based solution in the offing?  Native Instruments I find is excellent in this regard.

    Anyway apologies if this has already been answered - but a quick forum search didn't return any results.

    I think a Cloudservice dont have many Benefits, because what happens when the User cant Access the Cloud or the Cloud is off for some Reason ? I also read some Comments on Social Media that this allready happend on some Cloudservice based Libraries

    That cant happen with a Dongle. The Dongle means you can Access the Licenses Anytime, Anywhere without Depency on Online Services, and Online Clouds are more Insecure in Comparison to a Dongle.

    After reading those who have been upset with Cloudservices went off on Social Media. I imagined, Someone who make a Contract Work and he cant Access the Licenses he purchased, because the Cloud is off. He get angry twice. He need to break the Contract, which can lead to a Refund depending on the Contract and He cant access the Licenses he purchased. So He paid for Licenses and want to make Contract Work but in the End he has to pay because he break the Contract and no Music was made at all.

    Whats true is that a Hardware Dongle can break or get lost, but whats also true is the Licenses are available everytime.

    In view of this licenser approach, my related question is: "Does one have to be on line to be able to use VSL?"

    Important, as I have to be portable and have only one usable USB slot normally occupied by my hard drive. May seem a naive issue but I have to sort it out, quite enthused by VSL but see the administrative "problems" as a sticking point. Besides, USB sticks can't be relied upon. My DAW and instrumental software (e.g.Pianoteq) don't need them.

    No.  VSL uses the elicenser which is a dongle system.  I've come to the conclusion that if you don't have to travel then keep the Vienna key (dongle) at home.  Just do your MIDI programing or notation on the go.  If you loose that key you loose your licenses and you'll have to pay to get them back.

    But you will have to be online to register and download your products of course.
