Hi there,
I've recently built a new PC and am redoing my orchestral template in Reaper. I did a test: is there a benefit in using Vienna Ensemble (not pro, which I don't own) on the same machine as Reaper or would using Vienna Instruments Pro instrument tracks directly in Reaper be more efficient in terms of memory/CPU usage and load time?
So I composed a one minute "stress test" track with lots of VSL instruments, some Kontakt libraries and a variety of plugins such as reverbs and EQ's. Below are the results, which I took from Windows 10's "Performance Monitor". Ethernet was disabled and background apps were quit. The test track was looped 4 times. The PC was rebooted for each test.
Reaper + 2 instances of VE containing lots of VI Pro's:
- Load time: 1:48 seconds
- Memory free: 8329mb
- CPU spiked at 94%
Reaper + lots of VI Pro's as instrument tracks:
- Load time: 1:14 seconds
- Memory free: 8301mb
- CPU spiked at 85%
So: much faster loading time and less CPU stress without VE. Isn't VE supposed to make it easier for Reaper, or is Reaper just very good with CPU management? Or are there VE settings I need to tweak (I fiddled with the multiprocessing thread count settings, with no noticeable changes)?
PC specs are:
- Intel Core i7 7700 - 3.6 GHz 4 cores
- ASUS PRIME Z270-A
- HyperX FURY - DDR4 32 GB
- Separate SSD's for OS, audio recording and sample libraries (SanDisk Ultra II and 2 Samsung 850 EVO's)
- Windows 10 Home
- Reaper 5.70 and latest Vienna Ensemble/Vienna Instruments Pro.
- VSL libraries: SE, lots of Download instruments, Chamber Strings and Orchestral Strings.
- RME Babyface
