  • Sibelius and VE: Sound distortion problem

    Dear all,

i encounter a (serious) strange sound distortion problem with Sibelius 8.0 and Vienna Ensemble 5.4.16488 (64bit).

I attached 3 small sound files to give you an impression of the problem; the examples are recorded just with my handy, (please ignore the click-sounds in the background as they come from the pc-mouse with which i "played" the keyboard in the VE window).

The instruments (not only violin and french oboe as in the attached examples) are practically unplayable due to a strange distortion/aliasing?!

I told Sibelius (manually) where to find the Vienna Instrument, Vienna Instrument Pro, and Ensemble VSTĀ“s (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Steinberg\VST2) and set Sibelius to use playback device Vienna Ensemble and sound-set VE Special Edition; both are shown correctly in the Sibelius playback devices window. Vienna Ensemble 64-bit is connectd to localhost.

The Info in the lower right corner of the Vienna Ensemble Window shows: CPU usage around 10%; Plugin latency compensation (Samples) is 0 (zero). In the VE preferences "Plugin Latency Compensation" is enabled.

In VSL directory manager i changed the "preload size" from default to 2048 and then to 4096, but i made no difference; sound still distorted/aliased. I checked if the cause could maybe be a clipping problem (in the different mixers), but also at soft volumes the distortion appears.

In VI Standalone or as VSL-plugin in Cubase everything sounds fine and normal; also other virtual instruments work without problems (Pianoteq; Vubase, etc.); thatĀ“s why i donĀ“t think that the soundcard (EMU 1820) causes the problem.

I have no clue what this might be, please help.

    Thanks a lot for suggestion,

    Andy

    System: Win7 Prof 64 Bit, 16GB Ram, Intel Core i7-2600 @ 3,40Ghz, latest updates.

Vienna Instruments Pro, Special Edition 1+2, Mirx.

  • Hello songdiver!

This sounds like a problem coming from your audio driver. I would check the Sibelius Audio Engine Options menu and experiment with different settings. Maybe an update of the driver might help as well.

    Best regards,
    Andi
