  • Jazz Drums / software / getting started

    hi!

i'm new here and i have a few questions.
what do i need to get started, maybe there is already a thread for this -
if so, it would be great if you can post some links here.

i'm interested in the vienna jazz drums.
i want to play the samples in real time (i don't want to seqeunce them) via a 16 pad controller or an e-drum set (via midi),
so i need a prepared drum-kit which responds to midi, is velocity sensitive and changes the samples individually, so that it sounds as close to a real drum-kit as possible. i don't need loops or grooves.

besides the sample pack, which software do i need, to do this?
vienna instruments pro? the software should run as a VST-Plugin in Ableton Live 9 / soon 10

and are there one-shot samples that come with the pack, which i can load into my mpc for example too?
or how can i use the pack without any vsl software?

maybe later i will expand my sample collection with upright bass, piano, trumpet, sax,...
which i want to play by myself too via a keyboard (like the jazz drums). can i do this with the same software?

maybe you can explain the differences between the software programs,...

and are there sometimes some discounts (or packs) on the vsl stuff (maybe christmas)?

thank you for your answers! greets LP.

    german version:

    hi!

  • Hello LP.!

Many questions. ;-) I'll do my best to shed some light.

    >> i'm interested in the vienna jazz drums. i want to play the samples in real time (i don't want to seqeunce them) via a 16 pad controller or an e-drum set (via midi)

=> That's possible. You will have to program your e-drum set in a way that it triggers the pitches where the different articulations are mapped.

    >> besides the sample pack, which software do i need, to do this?

=> All our sample libraries come with the Vienna Instruments player and the Vienna Ensemble instrument host. Amongst other formats they also come as VST-plugins. No additional software is needed.

    >> are there one-shot samples that come with the pack, which i can load into my mpc for example too? or how can i use the pack without any vsl software?

=> Our instruments are crypted. You don't have access to single samples. So our samples can only be played with our software.

    >> maybe later i will expand my sample collection with upright bass, piano, trumpet, sax,... which i want to play by myself too via a keyboard (like the jazz drums). can i do this with the same software?

    => Yes.

    >> maybe you can explain the differences between the software programs,...

=> All our software products have descriptions on the product pages. If you have any concrete questions, don't hesitate to ask.

    >> are there sometimes some discounts (or packs) on the vsl stuff (maybe christmas)?

=> Yes, we have different offers with discounts through the year. You can always check on the start page of our website or order our newsletter.

  • hi andi,
    thanks for your respond!

can you please explain the mapping more specific?

if i map the different midi notes on my pad controller (mpc elemet) to the different samples, then it will only play one sample in different velocity?
doesn't the triggering of the different samples somehow work with velocity range? or how do the samples change?

and aren't there any kits that work like i need it right away (plug & play)?

also, do you maybe know if there is a chance that the jazz drum pack will be discounted soon?
    then i would wait. ;)

    thanks again! greets LP.

  • Hello LP.!

I have sent the Jazz Drums library manual to your e-mail address. You can find detailed mapping information there.

All articulations have been sampled in various velocities.

If your e-drum set has a General MIDI preset, then it should work with the General MID preset that's included with the Jazz Drums. Otherwise you will have to program your e-drum set accordingly.

There are no plans on a discount for the Jazz Drums for the remainder of the year.

    Best,
    Andi

  • Hi Andi and others I have noticed repeatedly that when I use the jazz drums library there is a marked difference in overall volume (lower) than other VSL instruments. I’ve checked to make sure that VIP settings are correct (as far as I can tell) and I have to max out the master volume and other controllers (expression, etc.). Any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong? The ride cymbal is especially low in volume, but...and I hate to admit this...maybe that’s just my hearing :) I have to raise the fader in the VEP mixer and also in my DAW (DP 9.5). Is this expected behaviour of the library? Or can you suggest I try some strategy or other. All my other libraries are fine. Paul R

  • Hello Paul!

The Jazz Drums have a high dynamic range. So if you are playing with a middle or even more so with a soft dynamic level, the volume will be lower than in other instruments.

You might try one of the preprocessed Vienna Ensemble presets like JazzDrumsProjects/VIFrames processed with Vienna Suite/VIFrames for VI5/JD_Sticks_processed_Batucada_DT.

    This one is louder instantly.

    Best regards,
    Andi
