  • Repeated notes don't sound!

Any help is GREATLY appreciated! I have everything figured out and working except this one major problem. Using Overture 5 with VI Special Edition.

When I have the same note repeated  the 2nd note often does not sound. Or the second note, when it does sound, is shortened. For instance a 16th note followed by a 1/2 note of the same pitch- the half note plays like a staccato 1/4 note. This only happens with consecutive notes of the same pitch and doesn't matter if an articulation (keyswitch) is added or not.

The midi date in Overture looks correct- not length and all. No overlap..I have checked and played around with all the parametrs on the Vienna instrument screen with no success.

  • Hello Pete!

Although you write that the MIDI data looks like there's no overlap, this problem sounds very much like there is an overlap. If the note off command of the first note comes after the note on command for the second note, the second note gets truncated. Maybe there's a setting somewhere in Overture that makes some or all notes longer.

  • Andi,

Thanks for the reply. I just recently switched to VSL. The same score, when it was using Garritan Personal Orchestra, did not exhibit this problem, which is why it is so puzzling.

  • Hello Pete!

I would try to shorten the MIDI duration of the preceding notes where this problem occurs. Does that help?

  • I shortened the notes in the midi piano-roll window of Overture but this did not solve the problem. It also would not explain why , when the second note does occassionally sound, that note does not play its full duration. Again, if this was a note on/note off issue, why did it not occur with Garritan? It also seems to be more prominebnt in the Trumpet selection from Special Edition.

  • I just tried changing the instrument on that staff/track to clarinet- same problem...so it's not a problem with the patch.

  • Hmm. That's really odd. I would try to export a MIDI file, open this MIDI file with a DAW and see what happens there. I don't have another explanation for your problem than MIDI commands coming from Overture.

  • well...problem solved. It was a setting in Overture where a legato expression defaulted to 100% note value, whivh caused the note-off command to happen too late and it prevented the next note's note-on command, if i'm understanding it right.

One last question while I have your attention- aside from using dynamic marks in Overture to control the relative volume  (as well as tonal changes) of the instruments, is there a way to adjust the default volume of each VSL instrument? In other words, when the full orchestra is playing forte, it seems the brass is not as loud as it would be in reality compared to the other sections.  I don't see a master volume control for each VSL instrument that will raise or lower the volume independant of Overture's commands. I know I can fix this in a DAW, but it would be great if I could balance it within VSL, using Vienna Instruments as my host.

  • Hello Pete!

I'm glad we were able to solve your problem.

There are different ways to take care about volume balance of instruments with our software.

    - In the Vienna Instruments player you have the Master Volume and the Exression faders.

    - The Dynamic Range (Advanced/DynR) fader can further enhance or compress the dynamic range of instruments. The lower you set the value, the louder the soft dynamics will get and vice versa.

    - If you are using Vienna Ensemble as your instrument host, you have an additional mixer to balance the volumes.

    Andi
