  • VEP and Sibelius

I have set up VEP on a slave and the plan was to connect it to Logic. But what if it's possible to get the same result in Sibelius? If so, I would prefer that so much more.

But it seems hard. I only own the epic orchestra from VSL as I have invested mostly in Spitfire products. I'm able to switch between articulations, but can I adjust the dynamics while recording using a mod wheel like in a daw? And changing expression and vibrato seems to be a crazy amount of time if I need to add thousands of CC texts all over the score. But maybe there is a way that I haven't discovered?

And can you send a reverb channel only to the Sibelius mixer, so that you can adjust for example the reverb for the string section without going into the VEP?

And lastly, it seems impossible to recording something rubato, or 4 horns where you with the purpose don't play them with exact precision to make it more "human", without getting a score that's impossible to read.

Is there any solution to this, or do I just have to live with what I lose if I do this in SIbelius and a daw, and vice versa?

  • Hello McArnes!

    Many questions. ;-)

    >> But what if it's possible do get the same result in Sibelius?

=> It's possible, but it's harder to get good results with notation software than with DAW software.

    >> Can I adjust the dynamics while recording using a mod wheel like in a daw?

=> I'm not sure if this is possible. Anyway I would control dynamics either with recorded velocity or with dynamic commands in the score (like p, mp, f, ...).

    >> And changing expression and vibrato seems to be a crazy amount of time if I need to add thousands of CC texts all over the score. But maybe there is a away that I haven't discovered?

=> This can all be done with notation marks and technique text commands.

    >> And can you send a reverb channel only to the Sibelius mixer, so that you can adjust for example the reverb for the string section without going into the VEP?

=> I'm not sure, if I understand this question. I recommend doing reverb settings in Vienna Ensemble. Of course you can also load Reverb plugins directly in Sibelius.

    >> It seems impossible to recording something rubato, or 4 horns where you with purpose don't play them with exact precision to make it more "human", without getting a score that's impossible to read.

=> That's true. If you want to play and record rubato performances, a notation software is not the best thing to use.

  • Thank you, Andi, I apprecitate it!

About the dynamics. Yes I could use the usual expressions like MP, F, cresc etc. but I'm thinking much more velocity change than that. Like when a brass player plays a note, there's most often a little extra volume at the first breath, and both brass and strings do much more dynamically in one long note than just playing a MF. So I fear that to make this effect in Sibelius, I would have to have hidden expression marks all over the place.

What I mean by reverb channel is that I would like to add the reverb plugin in VEP, but to have it sent to a channel (one for the strings, one for the brass etc) in Sibelius to control the amount without having to go into my slave each time.

  • Swelling or declining dynamics can also be made with hairpins, but detailed work on that is easier in DAW software.

I'm afraid that how you'd like to set up the reverb is not possible with Sibelius.

    Andi

  • Thanks.

Any plans for a Vienna Daw AND Notation program? Something revolutionary?

  • Currently there are no such plans.
