  • Whisper in the Wind for Flute, Viola, and Harp

The tagline from my website for this chamber work: Beautiful modal melodies, poignant lyricism, and heartfelt sweetness harken back to the pastoral land of fairytales in this delicate, wistful piece for flute, viola and harp.

Becky and I welcomed our little angel, Aria Eve, in to the world on Monday. This piece was completed a couple of weeks ago and has served as a lullaby for her during the first days of life.

  • Just finished listening. Beautiful composition. Love the way you use the harp, especially. Flute passages provide a nice counterpoint. Tonally very interesting too.

Hope you get this performed live as well.

And Congratulations on the new arrival !!!!

  • Thanks, Anand. There's a very real possibility of it being performed, as I have an ensemble in mind that I'll pitch it to at some point. Dave

  • Excellent piece!  Is the legato set to "global" on viola?  It should be "mono" to avoid overlaps.  A simple thing to change anyway.  But I don't want to criticize as the piece is beautiful. I love the combo of flute harp and viola, the same as the great Debussy trio.

  • Glad you enjoyed the piece, and thanks for the helpful info re. global vs. mono legato. This piece was fully played in, and many of the overlaps weren't shortened in the daw. I'll definitely look at how that all works when I get back to music making. Cheers! Dave

  • Great piece of music Dave...composition is wonderful. All 3 instruments are involved in communicating the mystery of the melody. "Enchanting" comes to mind...well done!

And congratulations! How wonderful new life is!

  • Thank you, Wayne.  Always a pleasure to receive a compliment from one as talented as yourself.

  • Hi Dave,

Absolutely masterful. You did honour to all three instruments: you have written to their very own properties and sound. Together they build intriguing ensemble without losing their selves. You could call this good counterpoint, but I prefer sonic role which they play perfectly. And you have understood the instruments: the parts have been written to make them sound at their best in a nice modal way.

The composition as such is an open invitation to enjoy a chamber music concert. Very accessible, easy to understand and to dream away in. I'm a first row fan!

I wanted to thank you for the excellent thoughtful reply on the "other thread" that I don't want to prolong.  Anyway I agree with all the positive responses on this fine music.

  • Thanks again, William.  Keep doing what you're doing, as your talent and skill are appreciated by many more than you probably realize.
