    Hi,

Just a query about how MIR is used - Is this to be installed on the "host" computer, one of the three allowed "host" computers per license of Vienna Ensemble Pro?

Does processing fall onto the "host" or the slaves?

I probably got my wires crossed thinking about slave computers - 😊 - thanks

Does MIR get installed onto the "host" but use the CPU of the slaves?

I think you get the jist of the query - Just a tad of confusion to clear up, thanks

  • You can run both DAW and Mir on the same PC like I do if you have a powerful enough computer, or spread over several slaves if needed. THE MIR processing takes place on the PC MIR is installed and you're using the relevant instruments or plugins on. When connecting to MIR through the server, the local Vienna Ensemble install appears with an IP address as will any others over your network if that makes sense. :-)

Right OK, so either the DAW machine or spread over several slaves to run MIR, that is flexible!.

I know the VEP 5/6 can be installed on 3 different machines with the syncrosoft dongle but what about MIR? - Is there a limit to the installations? - So if MIR was installed over several machines would the one license cover this rather like you can have as many VEP slaves as you wish / need.

Is MIR the same in this way? - so you can install on as many machines as you like on one license? -  Just ascertaining if these is a catch! - EG - You need to buy more licenses! - If this is the case it needs a more powerful CPU or even a machine of it's own??? - Is MIR that CPU intensive? -Would 1 x AMD 8350 cover this? - or maybe a 4790K? - or a 5820K? - penny for your thoughts!

I've heard MIR takes a lot of processing, just how much? - reference to some different CPU's would be great! - Such as AMD 8350 / Intel 4790K / Intel 5820K / Intel 5960X / Intel 6850K / Intel 6950 X - A correlation of just how much CPU is needed to run MIR would be helpful.

As a slave the weakest CPU I'd use would be an AMD 8350 all the way up to 6950 X where there is no doubt !

    Hi Fraz,

Thanks for your interest in MIR pro.

Most of your questions should be answered on MIR's product page:

    System Requirements

For smaller projects, e.g., users of the Vienna Special Editions:

    • PC Intel i7-Quad CPU or better, with Windows 7/8/10 (latest update) 64-bit
    • Mac Intel i7-Quad CPU or better, OS X 10.8 or higher
    • 12 GB RAM

    For larger projects:

    • PC Dual Intel Quad Core XEON 5520 or better, with Windows 7/8/10 (latest update) 64-bit
    • Mac Pro 8-Core Xeon 5520 “Gainstown” or better, with OS X 10.8 or higher
    • 24 GB RAM

    Further requirements:

    • DirectX 10-capable video card with support for OpenGL 2.1 (WIN 7)
    • AU/VST/AAX Native/RTAS compatible host; also works stand-alone in combination with Vienna Ensemble Pro
    • ViennaKey (Vienna Symphonic Library USB protection device) or other USB eLicenser (e.g., from Steinberg or Arturia)
    • eLicenser Control Center software (get the latest version from www.eLicenser.net)
    • Vienna MIR RoomPack with dedicated impulse responses (sold separately)

  • Yes, thanks

There is a manual as well to download which I'll do.

MIR PRO 24 a cheaper version for multiple machine installations and one click integration with VEP & one license per purchase,  Does this one license mean 3 installations so if MIR PRO & MIR PRO 24 was used that'd be 6 machines just as an example? - thanks

  • Hi!

MIR PRO / 24 and all RoomPacks come with 1 license.

MIR PRO 24 was created as an add-on with additional computers, and additional RoomPacks can be purchased via back-office order (contact sales@vsl.co.at), if necessary.

    Best,
    Paul

As a reference I'm on a i7 3930k with 64GB RAM with SSD's for everything. Runs like an absolute dream with MIR; buffer at 2 or 4 depending on the size of the orchestra.

MIR is very efficient but I'd go for as strong a processor as you can. My old 6 core 3930k still holds its own in benchmarks even against some of the latest Intel offerings!

(except the i9 of course :D)

  • Thanks Derek for the feedback,

    I too have a 3930K or two!

Do you have any slave machines as well? - Or just use the 3930K for VEP & MIR? - Are you remaining at the stock frequency of the 3930K @ 3.2 Ghz?

It seems then that it is cheaper to run MIR on one machine, otherwise more room packs need to be purchased and only 1 license per machine - I get it - !

The weakest machine for MIR I'd use would be a 4790K with machines as slaves as well so it's good to read that MIR is efficient.

Of course I'd experiment with this but if weakest machine was 4790K and just used for audio, maybe some fx and MIR, it seems that this maybe enough with other machines for libraries.

The 3930K analogy was very helpful - It shows that not all applications use the CPU 100% - And of course a slave with a 5820K could be used if need be for MIR.

So I presume that 2 VEP hosts would be able to access MIR slave via the one click if need be?
