    Hope you enjoy!

    Listen to Aria's Dance

  • Hi Dave,

With pleasure I listened to Aria's Dance. Again a wonderful job: good composition and an excellent equilibrated 'trialogue' of instruments, well constructed and written to the specifities of the participating instruments.

Sometimes the sound of the horn is a bit too harsh, in a metallic way, which doesn't sound nice. Mostly it is a good horn sound, but here and there it deviates from its natural colour. (Too much velXF?)

This is a challienging score for unusual chamber ensemble. A good asset for a small concert!

  • Thanks as always, Max. You know, your anecdotal comments would be well suited for report card comments! In fact, the format of your comment follows exactly the standards and practices in my education jurisdiction to begin with a complimentary observation, followed by an opportunity for improvement, followed by a summary comment that is positive and leaves the student feeling successful. Lol! Seriously though, we're both in agreement re. the horn. There's a fine limit where it can be pushed before it switches velocity layers into that buzzier sound. That said, we listen in the car yesterday on a road trip and it was more prominent than on our fine home setup, where the horn blended much better with the ensemble. Dav

  • Lovely piece, nice composition and orchestration!

    Best,

    Hi Dave,

I've been a teacher all my active life. That's undoubtedly the reason of my 'didactical' approach in my comments (LOL 😉 😉. That's also the reason for my dislike of cheap criticism without any basis or goal. Ciriticism is in a way always pointless, unless it's accompanied by positive/constructive advice. We're all here to present our doings, knowing that there's always room for improvement which we hope to learn on this forum. Therefore listening and commenting are basic actions for every member (should be anyway). Personal taste is not the best of judges...

  • It's like listening to a heated conversation between three strong personalities. The cello, horn, or clarinet blurts something out and the others either agree, add to it or issue a challenge. Sometimes they all compete with each other but they are each acutely aware that others are listening in and no one wants to be upstaged by the other. Above all else. They each want to have the last word which I think the clarinet sneaks in at the last second. Anyway. Well done Dave but I think that horn gets a little blaring at times. Maybe tap that hi pass filter down a bit? Unless of course that horn is just very opinionated in which case it should learn some manners 8-P

  • Thank you, Jasen.  Spot on analysis of the "three way conversation".  The horn just got a little excitable...it's got a crush on the cello and wanted to expand its bell out like a peacock strutting its stuff :)
