Using a hardware reverb

Hey guys,

Does anyone here use a hardware reverb with Logic? I'm thinking specifically of the Lexicon MPX550. Maarten was kind enough to share his secret for the amazingly realistic verb he uses in a lot of his pieces, and I was surprised that it was this hardware unit.

I've moved so far away from hardware, and so much into software synths, sample libraries and Altiverb, that I don't know how easy it would be to integrate a hardware verb unit into my chain, and how easy that would be to do with Logic. I'm really tempted to try it out, because Maarten's orchestral stuff is the most realistic I've heard yet.

...oh well... I've got a MPX500 (and an old Yamaha), but I can tell you, after the Altiverb 5 upgrade, I've powered off both! (actually, I did it time ago... 'cause the best of software reverb is, I think, to have more then one setting for different instruments... It's been more easy have 5 Altiverb opened in Logic that 5 MPX500 in my rack!)

Thank you for that info. Right after I did that post I saw that Altiverb 5 came out, and I downloaded it immediately. It's pretty amazing... now I just need another Mac so I can do the Logic Node thing, and I'm set!

Not to go OT Kerry, but can one use the iMac G5 as another Mac? As in a node? I ask because it is single procesor - does that make a difference do you know?

Also, what do you guys think of the new placement system in Altiverb 5? I will be upgrading to it soon.

Hey there,

I'm currently running a dual 1ghz G4, and I have been reading about the Logic Node thing the last few days. Your master computer needs to be a G4 or G5, but the node can ONLY be a G5 -- doesn't matter if it's single or dual processor.

I need to read more about this though, because I noticed that EXS instruments can only run off of the master computer where the software is running, NOT the node. So far I know that the Node is for effects, like altiverb, but i'm not sure what else -- possibly to run virtual instruments or Intakt/Kompakt-type things.

I *just* got the new altiverb and started playing with the panning thing but I haven't truly used it yet to see how much it would tax my processors. I think it's a brilliant idea that they had Maarten Spruijt build panning presets for each section of the orchestra -- he's the master of making this stuff sound real!

I'm off to thumb through the Logic manual now, to figure out this Node thing...

Ok thanks Kerry - let me know if you will, how the placement sounds would you? How easy it is to use etc. I listened to Maarten's VSL demo on the Altiverb site - yes he makes things sound 'real'. Although I'm personally not really interested in the perception of 'real' when we're doing our thang!

Neither was Bernard Herrmann - you're in New York - you have a lot to live up to. Hahaha!

Well, the bad news is that the Node will only process Logic's effects and instruments, excluding the EXS24. It won't handle something like an Altiverb either, or anything that's an Audio Unit. So if you have 10 logic effects ina chain, then an AU, then another logic effect, the node will only process everything post-AU, so it would only task that one effect to the node.

Nodes aside, I wonder if you can just network 2 computers together and use the processing power of both? Hmmm.
