  • Mahler 3rd mockup

I just got Opus 1 a few weeks ago and I decided that I would do a detailed mockup in order to familiarize myself with it. I just finished one of the main sections of the first movement of Mahler's third symphony. It's 100% VSL, from Opus 1 and Epic Horns. Brass mutes have been simulated with EQ, which I think it turned out a lot better on the trombones and horns than with the trumpets.

It's the first track on my soundclick page - I apologize for the low file quality, but I don't upload things often enough to justify getting pay hosting.

    Comments and critique appreciated. [:)]

  • Very ambitious piece! Sounds quite good.

My personal perference would be to add more ambience to the woodwinds and brass. I think a greater sense of space would improve the impact and realism.

  • alex,
that your endeavour is ambitious and that the whole piece is quite good is without question - but beyond that, some brass and woodwind parts are really awesome! i have no idea how you did this with opus 1, but at some points i did not realize that i was listening to a mockup but simply enjoyed your inerpretation of this great music.
i agree with jay that you could even improve it by smoothing it out with a bit more reverb. did you play everything "live"? what instruments did you mainly use - legato? and how long did you work on this piece?
    best regards
    kai

  • Jay: Thanks. I agree about the need for more reverb, but I'm having trouble finding the point between the reverb being too little and it being too muddy. Definitely something to keep working on, though. [:)]

Kai: Actually, the piece was sequenced entirely with the staff and piano roll. Since I was doing this to learn the details about each instrument of the library, and not just the library as a whole, I actually did every instrument separately. I think every single instrument has at least one part where the performance legato instruments were used, though in order to get a complete "performance" I ended up using a lot more than just the legato patches.

I didn't keep track of how many hours it took to do this - it took a little less than a week to get from start to finish, though.

  • I've changed the mix to add more reverb, and to change the instrument balances in a few places. Does it sound better?

  • i don't think i heard the first version, but this is a cool mockup. very nicely done. Your sensibilities with the strings are great. Even with a great library like vsl, it's still possible to get accordion effects with the strings. And you avoided that beautifully.

  • Congrats, Alex on getting this performance chosen as an official Opus 1 demo.

    Jay
