  • Using VSL with HALion

    Hi All,

this is just a quick note to say that I'm absolutely and completely over the moon with this library. It's taken some reprogramming here and there, but HALion has converted the entire cube and performance set with relative ease. Keyswitching is easy, and up/down strokes for glissandi are no problem with the modwheel. I do miss not having a performance tool, per se, but I'm used to programming rather than playing in!

So now I've sat down (after 2 weeks' copying/extracting) and started writing - I have started with a quick mockup of Howard Shore's LOTR score - nothing accurate, or even by ear (more by memory), but the blend of instruments is great, and the sound is how I remember playing it in concert last year!

anyway - just a big thumbs up from a Mac HALion user...

  • Hi,
I'm also a HALion-User. Which version of VSL do you have ? Giga or EXS ?
As long as there is no different solution for Cubase/PC-Users than using Gigastudio, I will have to "translate" the entire stuff to halion-files.
(Still hoping that there will be a Kontakt-Version in the near future...)
    Best regards,

  • As an "easier alternative", we could ask for a performance tool which worked with other samplers, so that we can convert the format ourselves and still not loose what is the most amazing technique so far in the orchestral sampling world...

I mean the performance tool of course, in case you´re still wondering (not enough sleep hours uh?)

  • theiss2003,

i'm using the Giga version - I have had to reprogramme some of the patches, as HALion 1.1.3 doesn't completely import the Giga information - stuff like ModWheel need to be sorted out in the MegaTrigg page and Mod page (alternating Modwheel and Amount value = volume). Also, with HALion's sample sharing between programmes, it forgets where the samples are, so you have to load up every instrument and search for the samples (if necessary) and resave the instrument- I'm doing this as I go along.
I'm also building a Giga PC just as a sampler (hidden away, so it doesn't mar my Mac studio [:P] )

  • Hi topcomposer,
yesterday I visited the steinberg-people at the frankfurt-musikmesse. There they showed up the new HALion 2.0 - with extended Giga-Support, 5.1-Support, better filters (some great waldorf filters) and so on........
Altough I don't think, that Herb is going to create a HALion-version of his masterpiece (altough it seems, that HALion 2.0 does a big step, especially for use with large libraries) I still hope (like many others..) that there will be a kontakt-version in the nearer future.
