  • First time VEP user - how to plan my template for Logic

    Hi, I just finished building my slave PC and are about to begin working on my templates for Logic and VEP. I am wondering what is the best practice in Logic X: using a VEP multi instance to load channels 1-16 or having a separate VEP instance for each track.

    For me it seems easier to have a 1:1 relationship between the program. Modular, and easy to add/remove instruments. But it may put a lot of strain on my master mac?

    I haven`t started building my template yet - any suggestion on how to move forward will be appreciated! 

    My setup:
    Master: Macbook Pro i7 quadcore 2.5GHz, 16gb ram. Logic Pro X
    PC: Core i7 7800X six core 3.5GHz, 64 gb ram, all samples on internal SSD

    I may end up with approx. 300 tracks, if I compare to my previous template.

    One of the advantages of using VEP is that you can use it to host up to 16 VIP instances plus plug-ins and effects without a huge drain on resources which would happen if you set up 16 VEP instances by themselves.  You could go that route but why?  Just set up 16 (or more) VIP instead of VEP tracks.

    You didn't mention which libraries you have licensed but personally I start big and work down to smaller ensembles.  For example, let's say you have all the string collections except Dimension.  Personally, I like to layer my strings so...

    1. App. Strings 1st VI, 2nd VI, Violas, Celli and Bassi  Pan them wiithin VEP how you like.  I like the German seating.

    2. Orch. Strings 1st VI, 2nd, then Violas, Celli and Bassi

    3. Chamber and Solo Strings the same. 

    4. Solo Strings...

    I like to use keyswitches.  If you choose Keyswitches too try to keep them all the same or close for each matrix. 

    5. Save as your large string ensemble

    Once you've set up the large ensemble then it's easy to just delete instances you don't need for the smaller ensembles or different variations of the large ensemble (maybe you don't want the 2nd violins to sound as large as the 1st so delete the Orch. Strings 2nd VI and 2nd Solo VI).  Once you've whittled down the large ensemble into a smaller one for say chamber works or Pop strings then save those as different templates.

    BTW What the hell do you need 300 tracks for???🤔

    However I did go back to my Studio One template instead of Logic Could never wrap my head around the multiport template. In Studio One I could easily set up my track to port 3, channel 5 and so on.

    Also, I saved a lot of time since I already had my tracks laid out.

    The reason for the high track number, is that I'm using one track for each articulation, and for synths like Omnisphere, Zebra, I have 8 empty channels. 

    I am using various libraries for orchestral stuff and have included them all in my template. Of course I don't use all of them at the same time!

    My current organization is one instance of VEP per instrument section: Brass, Woodwinds, Strings, Keys, etc. Inside each instance i start with my first library on channel 1, and different articulations on the incrementing midi channels. Given that I have 32 ports, I have plenty of room to expand each section.
