  • Front, mid and back placement in Gigapulse

    I get really desperate using Gigapulse for "3D" dimensional placement.
    General question: is it possible to place different instruments within Gigapulse in position front, middle and back??? I guess YES - but how???
    I cannot find how to do that, neither the manual really explains this how to do!
    Let's say: I have on MIDI PORT 1:

    Violins ---> Ch 1, 2
    Flutes ---> Ch 3, 4
    Brass --> Ch 5, 6

    They are all routed to INPUT 1, 2 - so they appear (as Gigapulse is loaded into INPUT 1,2 as insert effect) in Gigapulse's "instrument list" - of course. To place them will for sure have to do something with MULTI MODE.
    AND NOW!!¨??? How to proceed???

    Some hints would be very much appreciated! Thanks a lot...

    Matt

  • The manual is very useful overall, but I agree that the GigaPulse section is extremely frustrating. There's nothing worse than being introduced to "modes" out of the blue with no explanation about what the heck they are or how to turn them on and off (you generally don't need to, because they're automatic). GigaPulse is actually very simple to use; it only takes a long time to learn if you RTFM.

    Just letting off some steam. Excuse me. [6]

    There are several ways to do what you want, but I like to use Groups of instruments in roughly the same position, e.g. flute and clarinet, and route the entire signal through GigaPulse on the Group rather than putting it on a shared bus. (You're still sharing it with everything assigned to the Group, but the entire signal is going through it.)

    Then you have to set up a GigaPulse speaker/mic path that puts the instrument where you want it. Command/click on a mic and a speaker.

    Finally, Mic to Mixer routing should be True Stereo, with the green checkboxes alternating between left and right.

  • err I think his question is "how do you use one instance of gigapulse to possition multiple instruments in the virtual space?"

    I felt like asking that question for awhile myself, but from using it I think you have to have different instances of gigapulse (on different groups or aux buses) for different possitions in the space(room, hall)

    if there *is* a way to use one instance on one group channel for an entire orchestra and have all the instruments possitioned correctly, I wish someone would show me how to do it [:'(]

  • Then you don't put the GP on a Group, you put it 100% wet on an Aux Return and send the signals to it from the mixer Input channels your instruments are assigned to. You can pan each instrument's level in the reverb by unlinking the aux sends, which you'd normally set to be post-fader so your wet/dry balance doesn't get screwed up if you lower or raise the channel fader. Obviously, turn up the left channel and the right one down if you want it to be panned to the left.

    You also have to set up appropriate mic/speaker paths in GigaPulse, of course, for example L-11 and R-17 (control-click on the mic and then the speaker). Again, the mic-to-mixer routing should be True Stereo, with the green checkboxes alternating between the left and right outputs.

  • right, but still you're talking one instance of gigapulse and therefor 2 impulses max(using multi mode). I should have been clearer, I meant positioning instruments inside the virtual space using the pre-defined impulses only, no panning. I don't think thats possible with 1 instance of gigapulse.

  • THanks for the replies. So unfortunately I must say that GP doesn't make sense at all for orhcestration stuff at the moment, cause it is too CPU intensive.
    I mix down the groups as wav tracks then and import them into Cubase (or whatever). With IR-1 I get alsmost acceptable results for the moment...

    It is time for MIR!!!!!

  • cmpsr2k, you can use just one mic-speaker path (i.e. one impulse) as an insert if you want, but by definition you need two for stereo. There isn't a way of addressing each of the two impulses individually in one instance that I know of. You can still pan the individual signals if you're sharing a single GP as an insert on a Group, but of course you can't use the Perspective control (is that what it's called?) individually.

    Is that what you mean?

  • err no not at all, *that* I realize and I also realize the answer to my real question is "no it can't be used that way" what I mean is:

    theoretical numbers, just an example:

    I have 20 orchestral instruments on 20 different channels in the mixer. Each goes into a different place in the orchestra. To get the most realistic sound I want to use all 20 impulse areas in the "large hall" setting. Realistically to do this I need 20 isntances of gigapulse(one for each impulse in the large hall set) or 10 instances in multi mode using panning. As far as I know there is no way to do this with one instance of gigapulse since, as you pointed out, it only can actuate one impulse at a time or 2 in multi mode.

    Now, currently I'm on 1 gigastudio machine with a 2.4ghz CPU, which means I can get 3 instances of gigapulse at once before I'm tapping out the CPU. So with this load, I would need a minimum of 4 PCs to put every instrument "where it goes" using only impulses in the "large hall" preset. (assuming my understandings are correct)

  • Yes, I think you're right that one instance doesn't have 20 inputs, just two. You can use surround placement, of course, but that still doesn't solve the problem.

    On the other hand, I don't think it's necessary to use 20 reverbs for an orchestra. Maybe the thing formerly known as MIR will change my mind. [:)]

    To me the more fundamental problem is that the medium hall that comes with Gigapulse isn't very nice. It's recorded well, the Gigapulse engine is good, many of the rooms and mic/processor impulses are great, but that hall is just too grainy for my taste. You need to import another one, in my opinion - and I don't know how to do that yet, but it's supposed to be possible.

  • I agree on the medium hall, thats why I had asked about other impulses earlier. This PDF shows how to import your own impulses, if that what you needed help on: http://www.tascamgiga.com/pdf/Stereo_Wave_to_GigaPulse.pdf">http://www.tascamgiga.com/pdf/Stereo_Wave_to_GigaPulse.pdf

    So the issue I'm having, is finding out how to get a full orchestra sounding pristene on one PC running gigastudio (3 gigapulses)

    I need more money [:'(]
