  • Any PC DAW users using VSL?

Mac's and Logic/Digital Performer DAW's seem to be prevelant on this forum for VSL users. I'm interested in using a PC for recording. I'm looking for opinions from PC DAW users as to what type of systems and DAW software they're using.
I'd be interested in hearing why you use a PC instead of a Mac, and what you would recommend for equipment. Thanks a bunch!

  • I'm using Halion and Cubase on a PC WinXP SP1, with VSL Chamber Strings.
Why am I using a PC? Because I know my way around, there. [:D]
For selecting apropriate hardware, I'd always go and see a specialist in manufactoring audio PCs, like Carillion in the UK or www.steller-online.de in Germany. Because they do test runs with combinations of audio card / mother board / host software to find stable combinations.
Currently Halion is having issues when memory usage goes above about 1.5 GB RAM, I gues that'll be fixed soon.

I use Nuendo on a PC that was a custom system from Carillon. I use Nuendo for sequencing and recording. As to why I use Nuendo, Dietz put me on to it, and I have to say that so far I am very happy.
Why don't I use a Mac? Well a search of the forum might tell you [:)] , however, there is no reason for me to stay in Mac land (as I was for 5 years). My PC was cheaper, is faster (for Nuendo), more upgradable and has a better selection of internal components to choose from. I also run Giga, so it seems to make sense to keep everything PC, especially as I'm just about to set up a network system.

  • I'm another ex-mac user (I still have an old 8500 for sequencing with Vision) who moved to PCs fro the performance and price.

I use a simple Dell Pentium 4, 2GHz, 1Gb RAM under win XP with an Aardvark Direct Pro LX 6, and I run Giga 3, Sonar 3, Traktion, etc. without any serious problems (so far). I know that my current system has a RAM ceiling of 1GB which will no doubt prove to be a problem soon enough because I bought the VSL Pro Edition and it looks like a total RAM hog.

Anyway, 2 new 250+ Gb hard drives later everything is on my system and functional. I haven't touched any of the performance tool stuff yet (gotta prioritize!) but I assume that it will run just fine if I don't push it too hard.

Not sure if I recommend Aardvark products--they work, but everything is a little bit last-minute over there. My next card will probably be something more mainstream, and my next PC will be as fast as I can afford with at least a 4Gb RAM capacity (nothing will get smaller). Dual processor capability seems to be a no-brainer, but nobody codes for them yet, so it's pointless.

  • Audio-wise, there seems to be silent consent about the value of RME- and Lynxx-products. Both are in a price- and quality-range that fit the needs of most serious DAW-based musicians.

  • I use Sonar 4 as my MIDI and audio DAW. Reasoning? I've used Cakewalk since version 4 for DOS, so call it a mix of loyalty and familiarity.

Yes I do believe in free choice, and thus with a PC I can spec each and every component with imp[unity - I dont have to buy this or that just because that's all that works.

All four of my PCs use ASUS motherboards, Intel processors and RME Hammerfall soundcards, and are rock solid and stable under WinXP.

As yet for film and TV work they haven't let me down, nor have I found anything the won't do, either in hardware or software.

A Mac surely is something you find infront of a secretary in an architects office? [;)]
