  • Dimension Brass – Tuning issue: Need some advice

    Hi there,

I just purchased Dimension Brass and went straight into testing. Opening the first presets, I couldn't believe my ears. :(

I doubt that the instruments are totally out of tune, or am I doing something wrong? It sounds like when the pitch wheel is turned. I cannot play one simple melodic line, neither as an ensemble nor as a single instrument. I switched all the humanize features off, but it won't help.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Pixelpoet,

Maybe a short mp3 file could help to check?

  • Hi Paul,

I attached a short file of the Horn P1 playing scales and a short example of Yodas Theme, without any CC7/C11, just VelocityXFade on high. When I lower the XFade it sounds a little bit better... Maybe I am doing something wrong. I hope I will not make a fool of myself. :)

    Hi,

Sounds like it should. If you are using VI PRO, make sure that Humanize is at a low level, to get the samples as they were recorded.

The whole idea with the Dimension Series was to capture the performance of each player in an ensemble, and edit them as a group, without influencing tuning. We love the results.

If you are looking for perfectly tuned samples, the non-dimension products are the better choice.

This video about Dimension Brass will also help to understand the concept of the Dimension Series.

    Paul

  • Okay, I understand. Thanks. Than it's my bad luck in some way.

I thought that the single players were "more in tune". I had all the humanize at low, so it means that the recorderd intruments were already out of tune? Annoying because I would have rather invested in the non-dimension products, as you say. I watched the video a hundred times :) nearly, and I just thought that the imperfections only came from the humanize feature.

  • Hi,

That's what happens in real life when a section plays notes. You can always contact us directly at support@vsl.co.at to discuss a product return/exchange.

  • Hi Paul,

thanks for your reply. That's great to hear, because I read that a return is not possible when the files are downoaded.

But I have to admit that the divisi function is "the" thing I am looking for, and especially, the overall ensemble sound you cannot achieve with single instruments. BUT I have found a solution... I layer a triple (or vienna horn) unto the individual dimension player and the tuning issue is nearly fixed. That's sufficient for me. :)

  • Hi,

Sounds great. Yes, layering is definitely also a great option with the Dimension Series, not only for Dimension Brass but also with Dimension Strings (e.g., adding 2 or 4 Dimension players to each section...).
