  • Full orchestra spatialization with only 24 MIR channels

    Hi,

    I'm trying to see how I can route a full orchestra to only 24 channels of MIR spatialization. The first thing I will do will be considering ensembles (like Flute 1 and Flute 2) as a single dry source to be sent to a single MIR channel. All considered, miking a section with a stereo pair is the common practice.

    But I don't know if I can do the same with different sounding members of the same family, for example the Piccolo and Alto Flute. I guess they need their own MIR channel, with the appropriate timbral character. At the same time, here again the common practice is to place spot mics for all the members of the same section (if small enough), including Piccolo, Concert and Alto Flutes.

    Twentyfour channels might not be very much, if you want detail. Is there a way to remotely change a MIR icon position and instrument, so that one can recover the inactive channels for playing instruments (for example, when the Piccolo is not playing, but the Alto Flute is)?

    In most DAWs you can bounce/freeze/export individual tracks easily, allowing for the de-activation of the respective track(s). Technically, this would be the straight-forward approach, but I understand that you want to have as much real-time control as possible ...

    Thank you very much for your answer. I see that using MIRPRO24 is a bit limiting, compared to the full version, but I knew this. Judging from my few tests, I would say that the sense of realism and position is still strong, even when working with instrument families instead of individual instruments. Probably yes, this way I'm declassing a bit MIR to a traditional convolution reverb.

    Having remote control on the icons would be great. The difference between MIRPRO and MIRPRO24 will still be there, since program-changing the icon during a piece would still be more work, than just setting the stage with all the needed icons in MIRPRO.
