  • SE Vol. 2 Chamber Strings vs Standard Chamber Strings.

    Hi,

I currently work with VSL SE Volume 1 Plus with VI Pro and MIRx and am looking to expand to chamber strings to work on some small ensemble writing. I'm trying to choose between:

1.) VSL SE Vol. 2 Strings and Vol. 2 Strings Plus - ~$100 each - total of $200.

2.) VSL Chamber Strings I - Standard Library for $207.

I'm working on a Macbook Pro 2.8 i7 with 16 GB RAM and like to keep the footprint reasonable. Around $200 is my budget at the moment. I'd have more articulations with the SE Vol. 2 package, but higher quality with the standard version. I've been composing for a couple of years and have "part-time professional" aspirations, meaning that I have a couple of library placements and am looking to find my first short film to score.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks,

    W

  • The only articulations that are in the SE package, and not in the Standard edition, seems to me to be the pre-recorded repetitions. The Standard edition has some more articulations than the SE edition. For the same price, I would go with the Standard edition. You will then be able to upgrade to the Full edition for a much reduced price.

    I agree,

The VI pro will help you "fake" some of the articulations that you are missing with just the standard library but you can't fake things like half tone sampling from whole tone so the CS Standard is a better option.  Also, VSL runs some kind of special every month so wait and sooner or later a sale will come up which might help you get the extended.

  • Thanks for the replies! I ended up going with the Chamber Strings I standard that are on sale.

They sound great - just what I was looking for.

  • Yes, they are indeed astonishing, the first time you play them. O, and the following times, too!
