  • HISTORIC WINDS III - natural horn

Congratulations on the publication of the natural horn in HISTORIC WINDS III.
In the sample content only the Natural horn C alto (!) is described so far. But there are audio demos for natural horn in Es, F, Bb alto and C basso (!). How are the natural horns for VSL recorded? Really with 4 different instruments? The Bb alto sounds very transposed and
    for the height too smooth.

  • Hi Triangle,

each of the 10 available Horns is an unique recording. Historic Winds III offers 10 different horns.
On the sample content you can also read this info:

"Since the articulations are exactly the same for all the natural horns and only differ in their sample counts and ranges, only the Patches of the Natural Horn in C Alto are listed here."

That means all the other horns contain exactly the same patches which are listed for the C alto.

    best,
    Herb

  • The 10 available Horns are Tief-B, Hoch-B, Tief-C, Hoch-C, D, Es, E, F, G und A.

Ok, Horn in Fis is rare. But in Haydn Symphony No.45 in F-sharp minor Movement Menuetto is Horn in Fis written.

    A well-known symphony...

  • Hmm, as of today it is included in the Additional Winds bundle, but there is no discount for owning all of the other products in that suite, even once logged in.

That is, the Additional Winds bundle's promotional price is over 1026/1251 euros (standard/full complete) even though I have all but Historic Winds III.

Is the bundle pricing just not updated yet? I thought usually new products weren't included in a bundle until a bit later, at which point loyal customers get a slight discount by re-buying the bundle vs. the individual product.

I'm not in a huge rush (though I was last week), as my 2010 MacPro died a sudden death on Friday and I am busy setting up a new 2017 iMac. I was hoping to see something mentioned here or at vi-control about the bundle.

    Hi mhschmieder,

Sorry to hear about the confusion here.
The new Historic Winds III is NOT included in the Additional Winds Bundle during the introductory price period, as usually with new products. That's why you don't see an upgrade price for the Additional Winds Bundle. I recommend to take advantage of the introductory price in July (€295 instead of €395).

Historic Winds III will be part of the Additional Winds Bundle from August onwards, at the same time the Additional Winds Bundle price will go up.

Hope that helps and that setting up your new iMac will be smooth! 😊
    Best,

    Stefan

  • Stefan, thanks for clearing that up. It is listed under the Additional Winds Bundle on that product page, but wasn't a day earlier. I refreshed that page just now, and it still shows up, so someone might have prematurely added it to that page. I don't see a way to attach an image so I'll simply provide the direct link to which page I mean:

    https://www.vsl.co.at/en/Winds_Complete/Additional_Winds_Bundle

It's not a problem for me that it isn't included yet, as I didn't expect it to be. I'll buy the Historic WInds III on its own at the promotional price over the next few days. I'm really excited that you are building up an entire early music ensemble!

    Hi mhschmieder,

Thanks for explaining to me what you mean!
We've adapted the way we displayed the Historic Winds III here, hope this will help to avoid future misunderstadings.
Thanks for having taken the time to report this, and also for sharing your enthusiasm about our growing collection of early music libraries!

    Best,
    Stefan

  • Ah, yes, that explains it perfectly, now and forever. :-)

I am downloading my copy of Historic WInds III now. Bought it a day or two ago and received the codes while at work today. Won't have the energy to use it tonight, but do already have a piece that I thinbk would benefit from natural horn vs. valved horn.

  • Hi

Why is there no folder for the new Natural Horns in the Matrix area? All the other Historic Winds have their own folder but not the Horns. Is there a reason ?

    Thanks

    David

  • Hi David,

I think that Herb simply wanted to save you a few clicks!

  • Hi Paul + Herb,

    Great to have "natural horns".

One remark and one question about the tuning of the available 10 Horns:

    1) I fear in your online Productdescription "B basso, B alto," could be mistaken by those not familiar with german musical language as the german "H" while obviously german "B"  (= english Bb) seem to be meant.

    2) More interesting is the question about the tuning in which those 10 natural Horn are recorded:

Are they assimilated to the modern temperated tuning (as modern players of the natural horn might perhaps do to fit with the temperated tuning of other modern instruments) or are they recorded in the numeric correct "just tuning" as the partialtones are available without modification by the player what means with little differences to the temperated tuning depending to the own tonality of each natural horn. If so I wonder how this will correspond to the abilities to load scales of different tuning sytems in VI.

If they would be "out of the box" by default asimilated to the temperated tuning, are there perhaps files available which allow to load the natural "just tuning" of each horn ( as we already can load other tuning systems like Werkmeister 3 etc.).

In short is there any way to directly decide between the "just tuning" of a certain horn or its assimilation to the temperated tuning?

  • Hello fahl5!

The natural horns are tuned in equal temperament. So they are compatible with our other instruments. With VI Pro it is possible to tune them in other systems like just instonation.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Please, could you (VSL) provide the tuning-files for each of the 10 different natural horn to let VI play it in just intonation. I expect those files must be instrument specific, so I fear I would find anything likewise in the exsiting collections of tuning-systems which one can load in my VI-Pro.

Or let me know is there any other way to get the natural intonation of those instruments. (I am not so convinced of the option to let the user do it for himself with trial and error)

  • The Just Intonation scales are already included with VI Pro. You can load them under Advanced/Matrix/Matrix Scale. The root key can be chosen there as well.

    Best regards,
    Andi
