    Hi all!

    Although it took many hours of midi manipulation, Becky and I are very pleased with how this turned out...Hope you'll give it a listen!

    Wonderful composition! I specially love the part and sound of the bass clarinet.

    (BTW, I've listened to Acclarion'e performance of the Händel's Harmonious Blacksmith and it was most enjoyable! As an accordionist, I normally hate transcriptions of classical compositions, but this one is so light hearted and truly written for the instruments used, that is is a real pleasure).

You know, I'm beginning to think you might be the only person that enjoys my music on this forum :) Actually, we're all very lucky that you take the time to listen and comment as many of us "lesser knowns" don't get the "clicks and feedback" that the big boys get. I didn't realize you were an accordionist. Small world :). As for transcriptions, I totally agree...although they're what sells on our concerts more so than my original compositions. We did Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata on our second Cd, and Mozart's Clarinet Quintet on our third, both often requested in concert. Dave

  • Hi Dave,

    This forum (and other similar forums) is for many professional and amateur composers the only way to come in contact with an audience, beit though fellow composers. It's also a means to receive comments/reactions/advice on the published pieces. Remarkably enough, the reflex of listening and commenting has diminished considerably. Some colleagues never comment at all and yet expect praise and positivism on their works. Nothing wrong with being positive, but that is not really the way such a forum functions.

    I was rather disappointed about my 'Last Post'. There were many 'listeners' or just passers-by, but hardly any comment at all. Maybe it demands to much an effort to listen to a 12 minutes' piece. 3 minutes is probably the limit we can ask from an avarage listener. One wonders then what he/she is doing here, what's the use of it can be... I do understand your disappointment. But I keep coming back, because from time to time there is an interesting contribution or a technical issue that might help us perform better (although the latter is rather rare).

    And I have to congratulate you again with the direct and humorous way you adress your audience during concerts. I enjoyed your TV performances. Congrats too to Becky who has a very nice and rich sound on her (bass)clarinet!

  • Dave, this is a really good composition and performance!  Is the bass clarinet a MIDI clarinet?  (I wonder if VSL guys smile smugly to themselves when these questions are asked.)


  • Thank you Fabio!  I'm reminded of Jim Carrey's line from The Mask, "You love me, you really love me!"  LOL.  Seriously though, I always remember hearing things growing up where my music teacher would say, "if you touched one person in the audience, it was a success."  And while it's true, for the amount of time we all commit to our music, it definitely would be better to have a more than one supporter :)  

    William, thank you as well.  That's definitely high praise with regard to the bass clarinet comment.  It's VSL, standard library articulations only.  Between me and Becky, we put in wayyyy too many hours finessing it to our will.  At the start, I was convinced that writing it for bassoon would alleviate some of the concerns with more sluggish articulation/nimbleness, but I wanted to exploit the bass clarinet to the fullest.  Of course, there's also the incentive that Becky will play it live one day, so writing it for her was the impetus.

    The VSL team should definitely be proud of the quality of their virtual instruments and I'm definitely grateful for the ability to realize these works without being beholden to the whims, fancies, and schedules of other musicians.

  • Well Dave, I think those many hours of MIDI manipulation paid off. This is a wonderful piece full of variety and zest. It flows like the soundtrack to a silent film where everybody's running about trying to find the villain with the damsel as he's tying her to the railroad tracks. That bass clarinet sounds fantastic. It has an ominous presence especially in this particular piece that the bassoon lacks. I like the bassoon too but that bass clarinet was a better fit it seems to me.
