  • EQ in MIR Pro vs. MIRx

    Hello everyone,

Maybe this is a tricky one and I hope you guys can help me with that. Replies are heartily welcomed! :)

I decided to test MIR Pro (with Teldex) and stumbled upon some questions regarding the EQ settings in comparison with the MIRx version.

Sorry, I just try to understand, because one can not find the information in the manuals. That's rather annoying. I am so happy with your products and service, but the manuals could benefit from some updates, especially for (new) customers who are not acquainted to the products, mixing and processes in the background.

    1) I understand that the MIRx Pre-EQ is the character EQ in MIR. Right? Is this the "Pure" preset in MIR? I compared it with the Orchestral Strings and I think in MIRx is sounding quite like the "Warm" preset.

    2) If I wanted to imitate, for instance, the "Lush" preset with an EQ in Logic, do I have to uncheck the Pre-EQ in MIRx? I read in another thread that MIRx is a linear reverb, so I do not mess anything up when applying the EQ after MIRx. Do I have to use a linear or a channel EQ?

    3) Is the Room EQ integrated in MIRx? Because I think, I feel, that the instruments in MIR sound different, rather more "distant" than in MIRx. Maybe it is a different initial value for the Dry/Wet ratio. Because in MIRx that standard is 63 (50%). In the MIRx manual it says that this ratio was specially designed for each instrument. What does this mean? When each instrument is loaded with 63, is there, for each instrument, a specific value in the "background" that stands out from the others?

    4) Is Natural Volume different in MIRx and MIR? In MIRx (and its manual) there are different values (overview on the last page). For example, the Orchestral Violins in MIRx are -9 and in MIR -13,5. Is this correct and why?

Thanks in advance and a happy weekend!

    Hi Pixelpoet1985,

the short answer would be: As soon as you're in "MIRx Mode", MIR Pro will unveil all settings I used to create MIRx Presets. 😊 The sound achieved by MIR Pro using these settings and by MIRx (as part of VI/VI Pro) will be identical.

MIRx Mode got announced here, a Manual Addendum covering its use is available here.

Some specific replies to your questions:

You're right, there seems to be an error in the list supplied by the MIRx Manual. I'll forward this to the product management. Thanks for reporting!

The actual setting used by MIR Pro and MIRx are identical, though (see screenshots).

    Kind regards,

  • Hello Dietz,

thank you very very much for your detailed reply. I really appreciate that. Don't you have closing times? :)

The only issue I have with natural volume is that EVEN in VI PRO the values are wrong. I only have the Teldex MIRx and it says -9 (see the screenshot).

  • (Disclaimer: I hardly ever use Natural Volume myself, that's maybe why this little bug went unnoticed up to now ... 8-) ...)

You're absolutely right - it seems as the original values for some Natural Volume settings got lost somewhen between the release dates of MIRx - The Sage Gateshead and MIRx - Pernegg Monastery. We'll investigate.

(... and no, we don't have closing times. ;-) ...)

  • (Sorry for my sniffing and investigating. :P )

But I really love your products so much and they are so expensive*, so when I get hands on a demo version I am scrutinizing every little bit. Maybe you should block me for further demo licenses! :)

    Have a nice weekend!

    * this is not to be understood as a reproach

(I appreciate that. So it's really passion that drives you guys.)

  • Hello Dietz,

I still need some clarification regarding the EQ settings... :)

So when the order of when to apply an EQ is unimportant then the Pre-EQ could just be named EQ, right? So this was confusing for me in the beginning, too. I thought, "okay, when this is a pre-eq than I can add an additional (post-)eq on top". Sorry, I am a total newbie when it comes to mixing.

Furthermore, you said that the Pre-EQ are tailor-made settings. But I see that they are totally optional. Would you really suggest, from your point of view, to uncheck these settings? Would this be a disadvantage (even without external EQing in Logic)? Is it just a matter of taste? After all, you spent hours on creating these settings.

And what does "burnt-in" Room EQ mean? In the "MIRx in MIR Pro" manual it is said that this setting (assignment) is dependent on the selected instrument profile. I am asking because when I uncheck the Pre-EQ, will the Room EQ be "unchecked in the background" as well? Or are these two totally different processes? I assume the Pre-EQ is only affecting the timbre of the instrument.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello Dietz,

Oh my, I am really mixing things up, even though I can say that I thoroughly read the manuals. 😄

    Thanks for clarifying that!

    @Another User said:

... and yes, of course these Pre EQ / Character settings are a matter of taste, in most (if not all) cases. But ideally they can give you starting points for effortless music creation.

Okay, I see. The MIRx manual says that the Pre-EQ "strengthens the representation of the instrument in the room" and "tames possible frequencies". To me, as a beginner, it sounded like, in some way, a "must-have".

So, thanks again for your very detailed replies again. I cannot repeat it enough!!! 😊 Unfortunately, without having asked, the manuals do not make "everything" clear. Maybe one could improve them a little bit in the future.

But I am happy to be able to put questions in the future here. I love you guys!
