If your're trying to do the big IN YOUR FACE filmscores with the lush syrupy strings then App. Strings would be the better choice.  Also, App Strings 1 contains the entire strings sections, Violins, Violas, Celli, and Bassi. So everything is contained in one package.

On the other hand, with Orch. Strings, you have to buy both Orch. Strings 1 and 2. (Orch. Strings 1 is just the violins and violas.  Orch. Strings 2: celli and bassi.)  So you basically have to buy two products instead of one.  And then to upgrade to the full libraries you have to buy two products again instead of one.  But the nice thing about this is that you get more articulations with Orch. Strings.

The magic of the VSL strings is the layering.  App. Strings or Orch. sTrings sound good on their own but if you layer them with say chamber strings and/or Solo they sound fantastic.  Add the possiblilities of VI Pro into the mix and the results are incredible; as close to the real thing as possible with sample libraries.   No other library on the market today comes this close. 

I repectfully disagree with David about the Legato patches.  If you use the Release fader correctly the Legatos sound just as good with either library.

I have both and recomment both in combination with the dimension strings.

Why? Because the Orchestral Strings play very unisono - less detuning here. The Dimension Strings are really closing the only gap here, cause you can add detuning by taste. But in generall the Orchestral-Strings offer much and are great Action-Strings too.

The Appassionatas play more detuned but the sound is "too perfect for the real world". With the Dimensions Strings added they sound more realistic and "meaty". But if you pay the audition credit, check the Appassionata Basses playing Tremolo ... BRRRRRRR ... just "MONSTEROUS"! I love the sound ;)

What I really miss are deeper suspence and horror effects which no string-section has VSL offers ;(. And for Filmscores you'll need them at a point!!
Other Firms offer these effects in their String-Libraries and the users love them. If you need/want these effects too, maybe you should wait for the Synchron Strings which MAYBE will offer them.

My reply it's a bit OT, but I' want to take this chance to say  my 2 cents about this string fx you're talking about. Yes, we need them, and to have these fx in our main library it's cool, in order to have the spatial and sound coherence we're always looking for (instead of using other libraries just for FXs). But at the same time, if we don't have the chance to actually "compose" these fx, but we have only pre-recorded glissandi, clusters, etc, I think they soon become pretty useless. 

Maybe this is the reason why VSL has decided to wait with the release the extended Version of DS 2. Hopefully there is a small effect edition inside the extended-package ... 😛

The Orchestra Library contains more articulations for each instrument in general. The Double Bass with the Appasionata library comes with en extra small amount of articulations. So playing classical works is not really possible with Appassionata Double Bass (compare the table of articulations of both libraries).

Further: As mentioned above the two libraries sound different. Here you can compare the sound with two examples: Same effects, same piece (no MIR) so that you can make out the different sound of both very clear:

Mixing the largere String ensembles (Appassionata Orchestra) with the smaller ensembles (Chamber, Solo) can lead to an even more natural and richer strings sound. So if you have the money or if you can plan to buy more than one Library over the time buy all of the strings (full) 😊

Had you mentioned your budget before hand we would have been able to give you a better answer but anyway...

You'd probably be better off with the APP. Strings because with only 500 bones to spend you'd be forced to decide between Orchestral Strings 1 (only Violins and Violas) or Orchestral Strings 2 (Celli and Bassi) both of those together would excede your budget by over a $100.

SE is very basic version so I will probably go for orchestral strings standard and in the future will upgrade to extended. I will lose the richnes of apassionata but I already own the EWQL SO. and will try to mix these libraries. I liked the mixes from Beat with orch. strings and chamber or dimension , maybe one day will have the ability to buy chamber also.
