  • Would love to see an In-Depth VSL Dim-Strings Video Tutorial Series.

    Hi,

I would love to see an In-Depth VSL Dimension Strings Video tutorial Series.

There is a very limited amount of video tutorials on how to setup, use, tips, ..etc. for this amazing, and very flexible library.  VSL's Dim-Strings videos are a helpful, but a bit confusing to me, It would be nice if there were more step-by-step how to set it up, and use it in various scenarios video tutorials.

I already requested this from some commercial video tutorials companies, but I was also curious if VSL or anyone related to it educationally would be interested in developing this video tutorial series for Dim-Strings.

Not much exists on Youtube related to using VSL Dim-Strings in detail, with tips, and an overall step-by-step how to videos. So, I really feel this would benefit many of us that have not really understood how to harness the power of this library, and put it to great use in our orchestral templates.

Any feedback on this would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Muziksculp

  • I think you are right, but I think the problem comes from the fact Dimension Series did not recieved the audience attention they deserved. Too much complicated for nowadays user. After so many years, and with the Dimension Series appearing to be concluded, who has a real interest in that?

  • Hi,

I found this tutorial for VSL Dim-Violins , not a video tutorial, but very helpful, and detailed.

It is in German, but you can translate it to english via Google translate.

Hope this is helpful.  I still feel that an in-depth  Dimension Strings Video tutorial will be very helfpful.

    Cheers,

  • Hi Muziksculp,

Thank you for that very interesting in depth review of the dimension strings.

What I already told the VSL-Guys several times is, that they have produced an incredible bunch of samples, but left a considerable work to organise it to the users. Imho the user needs for the dimensionstrings a GUI which allows him just to make the main and important musical decisions (via midi-cc's, articulation-mapping etc.) like:

    • what articulation
    • how many players
    • which kind of articulation variant  (f.i. short staccato long staccato, portato or legato-vib, legato-nonvib, legato-prog-vib etc-. )
    • muted or not
    • force certain string or not

    etc.

Currently it seems to me very difficult to organize presets, which covers all possibilities the library offer to decide those musical questions free. This is imho really a pitty, since the potantial of the dimension strings therefor seems to me currently very difficult to use in all the power the available patches should provide.

But I think this need a fundamental reconception of VI. which of course is already now a great and very powerful sampleplayer unsurpassed by any other on the market, but still has to learn important things to make the great potential of Viennese Sample libraries and particularly the dimensionstrings in their full power in a more userfriendly way available.

  • I'd be interested in something like this as well.

I've been told I can do decent mockups with DS, but I still don't understand how to properly use the legato patches... I spending lots of time blending articulations to make it not sound poorly performed.

  • Maybe it's not exactly what you are looking for Stephen, but I did write a bit about how I set up my Dimension Strings Template:

  • Dom,

Yes!  I have seen this epic template setup.

I suppose my issue is less with the template, and rather the functional intent of the legato patches.

Example,... four sequential half notes that are slured together that outline major 6-4 chord with a 9th passing tone played andante in p or pp dynamic.   In some keys the legato patch has a pretty smooth transition between each and the sustains are wonky.  In other keys the reverse is true.

My current solutions around this are to have multiple sustain and legato patches that have different attack filter settings on those patches, or automating the velocity x fade between note transitions (least preferable), or smearing it by further offsetting each individual player's note start, early and late.

For fast passages, no issue there!

I don't think that this is suppose to be the way the library is used... any tips welcome!

  • Now I see. With DS most of the time I can get by with adjusting the attack (I think it is cc21, or 22). If a legato transition is too prominent for my taste I raise cc21 at that point. That works well enough most of the time for my needs.
