  • Solo Violin 2 - performance legato speed matrix?

Hi.  I just purchased Solo Violin 2 and was suprised that there was no Performance Legato speed matrix, which was a standard feature of earlier VSL Orchestra Libraries. There are multiple variations of Peformance Legato (i.e. different amount of vibrato, etc.) but no "Fast" patches, and no Speed Matrix to switch between patches depending on how fast you play.

Has VSL determined that the speed matrix is overkill and not really needed for realism on these more recent libraries?  Any tips for me to get the most from Solo Violin 2 performance legato?

    Hi Stephen,

We invented overkill when it comes to sampling ðŸ˜Ž

Herb simply decided to leave such a matrix out, and, like with all newer instruments, we skipped the "fast-legato" and went straight to the performance trills for the Solo Violin 2 and Solo Cello 2.

It's very easy to create such a speed-controlled matrix, but please let me know if you need any help with this: support@vsl.co.at

  • Paul,

Can the Perf-Trill articulation replace the Fast-Legato one in all (new and old) instruments? Is the result the same, or at least very similar? I'm asking, because this could allow some simplication when programming custom matrices.

Was the Performance Speed (Perf-Universal, I guess it is called in some instruments) matrix removed, because you think it is ineffective, and it is better to always manually switch articulations?

    Hi Paolo,

Personally, I am using the fast legato when available. More options always sound more authentic ðŸ˜Š

I think Herb removed the Perf-Universal, because everybody liked the name too much.

  • Hi Paul,

Sorry if I insist on this matter, but I'm trying to decide what to do with my VIPRO presets, and I'm a bit confused.

When examining the Solo Violin presets, I see that the speed-based L2 matrices contain several articulations, like legato, legato-medium, legato-fast patches. I can't find the same variety of articulations in PRO matrices, where I only see legato and trill-legato.

Is there a technical reason to not use the various legato patches? Have them been replaced by some automatic process transparently carried on by VIPRO?

I know I can simply load the old L2 matrices, but I wonder if I can use something already in the VIPRO matrices, working as well if not better.

  • Hello Paolo,

Those legato patches are very time-consuming in the recording and editing process. We found that you can get great results with "just" the slow legato and performance trills, which is also the reason why newer instruments were recorded with these 2 speed options.

You can generate even more variations with the Stretching Tool in VI PRO, if you want to.

    Best,
    Paul

  • Dear Paul,

Thank you very much for your answer. This clarifies very much the legato issue. So, I can go right with the PRO presets, and be happy of the simpler management of articulations.
