  • Factory presets and multiple matrices

    Hi,

I'm not sure this has been answered before, but I cannot find a matching answer.

When loading factory presets from the VSL SE volumes, I see that several individual instruments are loaded in the same preset. For example, the Orchestral Strings preset contains all the strings (individual sections, combined ensemble and so on), the Flutes preset all the flutes (piccolo, concert, piccolo+concert).

Is there a reason for preferring this setup, instead of devoting a separate preset to each individual instrument or section? For example, wouldn't it be better to have a separate preset for Vni I, another one for Vni II, one for Vle and one for combined a String Ensemble? Wouldn't each preset save memory, with less matrixes loaded into it?

One of the reasons I ask this is that I will work with a separate instrument or section per Vienna Instrument instance, and having them separated by preset seems cleaner to me.

  • This is a related question: why should I prefer using keyswitches to change articulations, instead of matrices? Do they work exactly in the same way, or is there an advantage of the one over the other?

Also, is it advisable to mix keyswitches and matrices? For example, one of the matrices could group keyswitches with the most common articulations (staccato, detaché, sostenuto, legato, tremolo, sforzato, pizzicato), while another matrix could group keyswitches with less common articulations (harmonics, mute, sul ponticello…).

How do you use these structures?

    Hi Paolo,

The instruments for the Special Editions are quite small, so all articulations of one instrument or section is best captured in a matrix.

We have arranged instrument groups in preset, simply for a quick overview for you.

I think these videos could help to get acquainted to the basic structure of Vienna Instruments.

    Best,
    Paul

  • Paul, I'm starting to think that keeping a whole section in a single preset is a good idea. This way, one can easily share programming for, say, all the string instruments, or all the clarinets, and program all common controls only once.

I'm only worried by the memory required for loading a preset. I can't yet understand if all the matrices in a preset are loaded when loading a preset, or just the selected matrix.

    Hello Paolo,

Please keep in mind that you can play only one patch in one matrix at a time.

Yes, all matrices are being loaded with a preset in Vienna Instruments.

You get more flexibility concerning loading options in Vienna Instruments Pro (you can load cells without samples).

    Best,
    Paul
