  • MIR Microphone Selection

    When mixing should I start with selecting a microphone or wait until after mixing?  Sorry for a noob question, I've never experimented with the microphone settings in MIR.

    Hi Aric,

    Did you check out the MIR PRO Documentation yet? Some great background info and overall information in there!
    Picking the right microphone will be a good start (imagine you're a sound engineer making that decision before recording).

    Best,
    Paul

    Sorry, Aric - I missed your MIR-related question in the VI/VE sub-forum.

    Paul is completely right: With MIR you can set up virtual microphones in a virtual concert hall much like an audio engineer would do in the real world. This means that you will start with other setups for small chamber music arrangements than you would in case of huge symphonic pieces, and that you will favour different settings in different rooms.

    The good thing is that you can always re-adjust your settings along the way, or even after you've finished your work on the musical aspects of your arrangement. Don't be shy - there's not "the" one perfect setup for all occasions! Watch our for good spatial enveloping, clean imaging and pleasing acoustic enhancing of your mix when changing MIR's Main Microphone parameters. (More suggestions can be found in the chapter "Getting 'that' sound" of MIR Pro's manual (p. 55 ff).)

    To get you started, we also supply several kinds of presets and starting points. One of them is the so-called MIRx Mode of MIR Pro:

    -> MIRx Mode Announcement

    -> MIRx Mode - MIR Pro Manual Addendum

    ... and then there are dozens of "Venue Presets" which give you access to carefully treated setups for all available MIR Pro Venues:

    -> MIR Pro Venue Presets

    Even more pre-fabricated MIR sessions are available in the "Tutorials/Templates" section of your MyVSL download area

  • Thanks!  I didn't realize there was a new manual.  I was using an older manual that didn't have many of these details.

    Aric

  • Well ... the manual itself is not _that_ new, actually. ;-D

    Maybe you got confused by the fact that there are several seperated manual addenda, covering different aspects like MIR Pro's technical background or special versions and modes. This is indeed a somewhat peculiar form.

    Kind regards,
