Dimension woodwind?
-
Hi Alan,
Dimension Woodwinds are not planned yet. Right now, you get 2 instruments for most woodwinds (Flute 1&2, Bassoon 1&2, Clarinet in Bb 1&2....), PLUS the woodwind sections that come with 3 players by design.
In our eyes, that should cover most situations.

Paul

I agree it would be good to have more, but with the current instruments one can create an ensemble consisting of
Piccolo
7 Flutes (including alto, bass and ensemble)
5 B flat clarinets (3 parts)
E flat soprano clarinet
Bassett horn (E flat alto clarinet)
Bass clarinet
contrabass clarinet
4 saxes
7 oboes (including Oboe d'amore & Heckelphone)
2 English horns
5 bassoons (3 parts)
contrabassoon
I may have left something out. This list does not include any transposition/pitch-shift doubling, which is normally used for 2nd parts etc. I have been concerned about this sort of thing because I am doing Symphonic Band recordings, which need a lot of doubled woodwinds. But you can get a lot of that rich doubled sound with the instruments already there.
Also, Dimension recording techniques were mainly evolved for instruments that have a huge distinction between solo and ensemble sound. So that is the strings and brass. and why VSL doesn't do Dimension with woodwinds.
HOWEVER - the one example of woodwinds really having the same big difference between solo and ensemble is with concert band. The band uses the clarinets like strings, and the flutes also. The large number of players creates a rich sonority in the concert band that is similar to the string section. So if VSL did Dimension Woodwinds mainly for that purpose it would make sense.
