  • Wondering About SSDs, Capabiity vs. Stability

    Hello forum,

I have two questions as I am considering replacing two aging hard drives with 2 SSD drives. Both for samples only.

    1. Will I be able to use VE 6 in "non-network" mode, in other words, can it receive and recognize MIDI data through a real or virtual MIDI port and have network functions turned off? I currently use software for MIDI over LAN and do not want to disturb the DAW (the other computer) with possible network conflicts and licensing issues, and I am not sure of benefits that I might find useful in making VE the center of a what is and has been a functioning network via Ethernet, ADAT and MIDI.

    2. Is there a point in getting SSD drives if the benefits require both VI 2,and VE6?. I am running version VE 4 with VI Pro 1 and stability has been consistently stellar for 5 years, only recently am I coming up to the limits of 24GB memory without playback or graphic glitches. Without control over pre-load time, which I don't have unless I change my whole system around, does it make sense to install SSDs anyway? Is there any other way to control pre-load times?

Thanks to anybody who takes the time to answer!

    Jerry

  • Hello Jerry,

I have also answered your additional questions you sent to our Support Team, so here are those answers again:

    1) Yes, you can use VE PRO 6 in standalone mode. The downside here is that you don´t get automatic latency compensation like you would when using VE PRO as a server in network mode.

    2) SSD drives in combination with VI PRO (which you already have) will definitely help the performance of your system.

    Best,
    Paul
