  • Xeon CPU's

    Hi,

I'm hoping for some feedback on the effectiveness of Xeon CPU's with suitable motherboards.  The Asus Z10PE-D8 WS and Intel Xeon E5 2620 v4 in dual configuration on the motherboard.  It's a server board as many of you would know this must be the right place to ask.

After getting my head round the range of E5 CPU's and the big cost of them I went for one of the cheapest but with good numbers from benchmark websites relative to the cost.  Clock speed is low @ 2.1 Ghz but with boost offered in conjunction with the motherboard @ 3 Ghz.

There are 8 cores and 16 threads and as a reference Intel's i7 3930k has 6 cores and 12 threads and is a mighty desktop CPU [or it was] clocked @ 3.2 Ghz with a boost to 3.8 Ghz.

I'd like input please about how many cores and threads can the likes of Cubase & Pro Tools handle? - With such an assortment of E5 CPU's to choose from it surely boils down to what is supported.

Please comment on the E5-2620 v4 - I understand it's not in the league of a whatever 26XX but these will be my first Xeons and will be installed on a machine with only hosts Cubase and Pro Tools plus some score software if the Red Net permits it.

Please mention your own machines as well and I'd like to hear the good and the bad so I'm better prepared.

    Thanks

  • So anyone here use 2 x Xeon E5 2620 V4?

  • I'm also looking some info about what is the best dual mode motherboard to use slave computer with Intel 2x Xeon E5 2620 v4 and so far I have found, personally for me, two acceptable options it's:

    1. Intel® Server Board S2600CW2R
    2. Supermicro X10DRG-Q

actually I would like to have an board at least 2 x thunderbolts-3 but so far such a dual boards I have not found:(

    Hi,

I've heard Supermicro are very good but I've not used one.  I've bought an Asus server board but maybe with a consumer twist to it.  Asus Z10PE-D8 WS.  The D8 part refers to the number of RAM slots and there is a D16 variant as well.  Only Xeon CPU's will work with this and there is a unique BIOS that allows overclocking upto 10% according to their website.

I'll be building this when I get round to it with E5-2620 V4 CPU's which are 10% less powerful than the next Xeon up E5-2630 V4 but £270 cheaper for each CPU but I may regret not getting slightly more powerful CPU's.

As far as thunderbolt is concerned the Asus Z10PE does not have it and Asus have quite a few X99 motherboards that support thunderbolt maybe more so than other manufacturers so it may be hard to find a dual Xeon CPU motherboard that supports thunderbolt.

I just did a quick search

    https://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon/C600/X10DRG-Q.cfm

    https://www.supermicro.com/products/nfo/Thunderbolt.cfm

There may be more but have a look as well! - Research is tedious!
