  • triggering articulations with soundsets with sibelius 7

Hello! I'm new to Vienna, and it's a lot to learn! My issue, and I've been trying to get it to work all day, is that no matter what I do I can't get it to change the matrix cell (pardon my lack of terminology)

I'd like to utilize portemento, harmonics, con cordino, etc... and all of the other capabilities of the solo strings I & II package, but no matter what I do, Sibelius wont change it. what's odd is the only one it will do is pizzicato.

I have vienna ensemble 5, with solo strings I&II, sibelius 7, and i've assigned manual sound sets with the proper channels.

I've tried also using technique text that was written in the pdf of optimizing sibelius playback 3.3.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I have pretty much run out of patience today :) Thank you!!

  • And you have installed the Sibelius Soundsets?

  • Hello xyresicrefulgence!

It can have different reasons why articulation changes do not work as supposed. My first guess would be that maybe you didn't load the correct VI preset. The Sibelius sound sets for our instruments can only work correctly with the VI presets loaded that come with the VSL Soundset Installer. These presets can be found in the Vienna Instruments player unter PRESET/Sibelius. Further help can be found in the Troubleshooting chapter of the "Optimizing Sibelius Playback" manual.

  • thank you for the responses! I did have some issues making it work with support. I'm wondering if i installed the soundsets in the proper place. I did load the preset for strings, (i think), under the tab, Preset, then under sibelius/strings 3.4/solo strings/SS I - extended (or standard).

also in the manual sound sets i chose the sound set of VE Strings. clicked on "use manual sound set" and assigned each of the quartet their instrument.

i did manage yesterday after posting to use keyswitch notes (but it would be really annoying to have all those leger lines for keyswitch notes), and tried to use the tilde to make a midi message, but ~C1,2 didn't seem to change the matrix selection.

i probably have some improper terminology here, so pardon my n00bness, please ;)

  • It's not necessary to add extra notes for keyswitches or Control Changes in order to change articulations. I'd check all points in the Troubleshooting chapter of the aforementioned manual to see where the problem comes from. Maybe you have the wrong Sibelius instruments in your score. Solo Strings need Solo Violin, Solo Viola, Solo Violoncello or Solo Contrabass from the Sibelius "Add or Remove Instruments" menu.

  • Hello Andi,

Can I add to this thread that the word 'instrument' in this context might be confusing to people because what is meant is staff. The troubleshooting section of the pdf says 'You have to be careful to choose the right instrument in Sibelius' - but this is choosing from a list of staffs, not sounds.

    Just a thought.

  • Hi Oceanview!

I have chosen the word "instrument" because that's what the Sibelius menu is called. "Add or Remove Instruments".
