  • VIP Midi Dump into Cubase Step Input + Middle C issue

    Hello,

I'm not finding a way to do this:  pressing Midi Dump button to put the keyswitch notes into Cubase's Key Editor while in Step Input mode.  It will capture them while recording but not in Step Input.

Also not entirely Vienna related but the Middle C in Cubase is different than "standard", everyone has opinions on this but my Middle C is C4 like in VIP, but Cubase is C3.  Would like to change cubase's keys to display middle C as C4 but it appears there is not a solution out there for this.

Using VIP 2 in VEP 6 and Cubase 8.5.

    Thank you!

  • Hi asilvestri,

Do you use the mididump with instances loaded in VE-PRO?
Mididump via Step Input should work when you send it from a slave computer.
If you are running VE-PRO on your Master computer it's not possible any more since Cubase 7.
This is somehow related to active status of the editor window in Cubase. Before Cubase 7 this has worked also when it was inactive. If you click Mididump inside VE-PRO you can not stay active in Cubase.
I already have talked to the Cubase developers to get it back, because I also miss this feature.

As far as as I know it's not possible to change the middle C defintion in Cubase. But it's possible inside VI PRO inside the "General settings". (the small icon on the left of the Version number). So you can set Middle C to C3 in VI PRO there. Maybe this helps to have the middle C defintion syncronised between Sequenzer and VI PRO.

  • Hello Herb, thank you for the reply.

Yes this is VIP running in VEP 6 on a slave PC (Cubase is running on Mac host).  When Midi is pressed in VIP the keyboard keys in Cubase light up but the notes do not go in.

Ah!  You answered this:  "This is somehow related to active status of the editor window in Cubase"........ our PC is controlled via a screen share, so when we click away from Cubase to the screen sharing app Cubase is no longer the foreground/in focus app.  I just verified this by opening the PC screen share from another computer, when Midi dump is pressed while Cubase is the foreground app the notes get input.

Having the MIDI dump button available in the Remote App would be a great work around.   I could ping Cubase about freeing up the Key Editor to work out of focus but don't suspect I'll get anywhere

    Thank you!

  • Is there any other way to trigger the midi dump?  Like via CC or something?

  • So sorry to hijack your thread without offering a solution to your problem. I just was wondering if there's even a tiny chance that you're "Alan Silvestri"? if so, count me among your biggest fans! If not, I'm sure you're still a pretty great guy :) Dave Carovillano

Currently we don't have another option to trigger a midi dump, but it is a good idea!

We will add a setting for choosing a CC to trigger the MIDI dump.

  • Martin, that's great news thank you!  I'm sure there are many other users with a similar setup as ours that this could benefit.  Any external way so we can keep Cubase in the foreground would be great, either CC or the dump button showing up in the Remote App

Dave, I am Alan's assistant.  Thanks for the kudos!

Forgive me for hijacking as well but please pass along to Mr. Silvestri fantastic job on Captain America: The First Avenger

That's the way film scoring for an action movie should be👍

  • Hi ASMI,

We have just sent a beta version with an implemented solution to your registered email address.
    Looking forward to your feedback!

  • Hi Paul,

Would it be possible to obtain a copy of the solution, I'm having the same issue with Cubase.

  • Hi Paul, I'm sorry I overlooked checking in on this thread.

    It works!

Thank you for working on this, most appreciated!

  • Hi falineleo,

In the latest VI PRO, you will find a new setting that will let you define a MIDI CC that will trigger a MIDI Dump (see attached screenshot, off by default), and MIDI Dump will make Cubase the active window now, so that the data will be received in Step Input Mode.

    Paul

  • Paul, Thank you very much for your kind helping.

I solved the problem...but the timing of MIDI DUMP, is not accurate.

And I can't input MIDI dump at stopped position but only can input by real-time recording.

so I would not be able to use this menu.  (I attached the screenshot) I tested in Cubase9 and Nuendo 7.1

  • Hi Paul and VSL family,

Sorry to report that the Midi Dump functionality you had implemented for us (bringing Cubase window to foreground and dumping the notes in while in Step Input mode in the Key Editor) seems to have stopped working in VEP 6.0.16178 with Cubase Pro 9.0.20, so we went back to 6.0.16068.  We are running El Capitan Mac as master and Windows 7 PC as slave.  This happened a month ago, I haven't yet tried to re-verify this or try on another system but thought to let you know.

  • Hi,

    Thanks for the info!
There are a few things we need to look into for the next VI PRO update, but I'm afraid this next update is not scheduled yet. Hope that VE PRO 6.0.16068 works well for you for now.

    Best,
    Paul

  • Hi,

Midi dump also doesn't work in VE (not pro version), as falineleo I can only input MIDI dump by realtime recording. I also can't set up the midi dump cc (when I click on the midi dump cc setting in VI pro no window opens). I am using Cubase 8 elements (windows 10)

    Best regards,

    Erik

    Hi Erik,

I'm afraid this has not been implemented in VE 5 yet...

I have just sent you a demo license for VE PRO 6, which should give you access to our Software Archive as well (to get VE PRO 6.0.16068). If not, please contact me at support@vsl.co.at.

The MIDI CC settings in VI PRO will not open a window, you can click-drag the mouse to change the values.

Our Software Team is very busy with the Synchron Player right now, so I'm afraid a fix will take some more time.

    Best,
    Paul
