  • Finale 25 and Vienna Ensemble Pro 6

I've been looking for information about the correct way (most efficient) to use Vienna Ensemble Pro 6 with Finale 25. Is there any special way to approach things re routing.

So far I have to run the VEP Server program before I open Finale and then I can connect to a Local Host. ??? Not very intuitive. There must be a better approach than the one I have discovered on my own. Maybe not.

I have VEP 6 on a demo license for evaluation for the time being and am trying to figure out if this is a good option for me or not.

    All comments appreciated.

  • Yes, that's the correct prodecure. Remember that servers can be running on other computers too. Connecting to the local host just uses the same proccess.

What libraries will you be hosting in VEP? If it's just the garritan stuff there's really little point.

  • I'm currently exploring the same thing.  Yes, you have to open the server on the slave first.  Then in your score manager you select your VEP and then connect...  It is definitely a learning process.  Still has not been a complete solution for me.... "Yet"  But hopeful.

No.not using Garritan at this point although I think you can use vep 6 for that if desired. I'm using VSL instruments. So far I've been using the 64 bit server. Lots to figure out. I'd love to see instructions in the manual for use in Finale. I found the instructions for Digital Performer 9 very helpful. Paul R

  • We could be of better help if you were more specific...

  • I was referring to the fact that in the VEP 6 manual there is a chapter called "Important notes for DIGITAL PERFORMER USERS" which is extremely helpful in setting up routing and explaining workflow in that DAW. I was suggesting it would be great to have a step by step description of the most efficient way to use VEP 6 with Finale 25. Until you get used to doing it, its easy to forget to run the server application before opening Finale. Not a big deal to be sure. Just something to get used to.

  • I have been battling through this and have gotten things working pretty well.

When I'm first setting up a Finale template, I'll open VE Pro server (doesn't seem to matter if I open it first or after), and then in the audio unit banks and effects, I'll set as many banks to VE Pro as I need.

When you click to edit the banks, it'll take you to the VE Pro connect window, and then you'll click on "new" to set up a new instance. Once it opens, I click on the lock to "preserve" the instance and give it a name.

Once I've got my instances loaded (or one at a time), I populate them with instruments. Then I save that server project.

From that point on, every time I want to work on the file, I open VE Pro first, and then I open Finale and load the file. When I do anything that causes Finale to load instruments (usually I click to see Audio Units and Effects), it automatically loads all the instances in VE Pro.

I HAVE sometimes used Garritan instruments alongside others in VE Pro. It's particularly practical if you're setting up a single template that you'll be using in different files, or perhaps with different DAWs. I do find that the notation versions of the Garritan string patches don't work if the inst is loaded into VE Pro rather than directly into Finale.

I also find that there is generally more sensitive adherence to dynamics and articulations with most instruments when using VE Pro.

I've been working on this a lot over the past months, and am happy to answer any questions if you have some.

  • I've got things working well with Finale and VEP 6 and my experience mirrors yours. Interesting that you don't have to run the VEP Server before opening Finale. Of course you have to run it, but you are right that it doesn't seem to matter what order you do things in.

I also use Digital Performer 9 and I have to open the server application before starting DP.

Nice to finally figure this out. Thanks for your post.
