  • VSL Load Times

I just installed the full package...very impressive sonically. The detail is quite overwhelming, but I'm experiencing some major lags in loading certain patches.

For example, The Tuba stacatto 1 in the Cube loadsin a second or two, as expected. Loading the second stacatto patch takes almost 5 minutes.

This was replicated on various other instruments...solo horn/clarinet staccatto to name several. Certain other patches loaded flawlessly.

P4/2.4 with 1 gig of RAM.Also same issue on an Athlon XP1700 with 1 gig. Bothe running windows XP.

  • This is a memory allocation problem of Gigastudio.
Try loading a such a long loading gigfile first after a reboot.
Normally it loads then with normal speed.

So this problem appears, when a certain amount of Ram is used.

You can also check the msg 32 process in your task manager, while gigastudio is loading You'll see, that gigastudio loads in this case sample for sample in 1-2 second steps.

Maybe one of our tech guys could post a detailed explanation of this Gigastudio problem.

    sorry,
    Herb

  • Herb,

Looking at msg32.exe while Giga is busy loading, I notice the priority drops to "normal," but when the load is complete (and at all other times) is set to "realtime."

This might be a question for your tech guys, but why does it drop to "normal" when loading a sound? What would happen if it is set to "realtime" as it is loading?

  • 'Downgrading' to W98SE would be the best option. This will also give you more available memory to load samples in many cases[:)]

  • Thanks, all. I suppose we can rack this up to another of the annoying glitches that plague Giga.

  • Downgrading to Win98SE isn't an option for me. I used to use that OS with GigaStudio when I first bought my machine. I was getting clicks and pops that couldn't be explained (I even had two "expert" Tascam reps come to my house to figure out what was causing them). Upgrading to XP got rid of the problem.

Can anyone explain why msg32.exe drops its priority while loading a sound?
