  • using vienna with soundset project in Sibelius

    Hello

I have a possibly naive question but couldnt find an answer to it on this forum.

I am tring to use VSL house style (solo + orchestral strings) in combination with the EWQL gold soundsets from the soundset project. While I eventually will have all instruments from VSL, I unfortunately need to combine VSL with woodwinds and brass from east west due to budget constraints.

The issue is that when I have both vienna ensemble and Play loaded in the instruments, the notations do not work correctly for the VSL samples. Is there s simple way to make VE work with Play in Sibelius? i.e., am I missing some check box somewhere, or are these two house styles incompatible?

I would appreciate help from anyone using these two libraries or with similar experience.

    Thanks!

    Anand

  • Hello Anand!

The "Vienna Symphonic Library" house style includes dictionary commands for our libraries and adapted dynamic values. Nevertheless it should also work with 3rd party instruments. I don't know, if the EWQL sound sets need any special commands in the dictionary that are not included in our house style though.

Make sure to reserve programs on the Sibelius manual sound sets page for all loaded instruments and for all active devices. More help can be found in the Troubleshooting chapter of the "Optimizing Sibelius Playback" manual.

  • Thank you, Andi, for your fast response.

The EWQL sound set has different (some non-standard for music notation) instructions, and needs the separate soundsets.

But if I include the eastwest soundset for even one of their instruments, it confuses the VSL soundset for the VSL instruments and it triggers *some* of the articulations wrongly. For instance a normal tremolo of the double bass triggers ponticello tremolo. But many of the other articulations just work fine.

I'll keep working around this to see if I am doing something else wrong. I just cant wait to get the symphonic cube which will solve this problem since it will all be VSL!

  • Hello Anand!

I didn't understand from your last message if some Vienna Instruments or EWQL instruments get wrong switches.

  • Hi Andi

some of the VSL sounds dont switch propertly if I load the EWQL soundset. Specifically the doublebass normal tremolo triggers the ponticello tremolo.  And the problem went away when I remove the EWQL soundset.

Below I have copied the screen shot of the play back device setup and the channel assignments.

I have also asked the soundset project person (Jonathan Loving).

    Thank you

    Anand

  • Hello Anand!

Our instruments only work correctly with our sound sets loaded, but you can load different sound sets for different devices. Something went wrong with your screenshots. To attach screenshots, check the button "Attach files to this post?" underneath the text field.

  • Hi Andi

Thank you for yoor continued attention to my post, but I think I resolved the issue which was rather a mistake on my part.

I figured that only one articulation of the VSL soundset has an issue (only if the EWQL soundset is also loaded). This is when I put a slur over a tremolo for the double basses, when it triggers ponticello tremolo. For some unknown reason, Sibelius seems affected by the EW soundset for this particular articulation. But a slur over a tremolo makes no sense as there is no tremolo legato in VSL (if I am correct). So it makes no difference to remove the slur. and when I do that the tremolo works correctly.

I have attached my screen shots in case you may have thoughts on why Sibelius might be confusing the soundsets with just one articulation.

  • Hi Anand!

A tie shouldn't make any difference for any articulation. It just makes a note last longer, but doesn't add any Sound ID. If you have added a slur instead of a tie, this might create some confusion indeed.

Also make sure to use the correct instruments from the "Vienna Symphonic Library" House Style. You will need the instruments with "[VSL Orchestral Strings]" in the name from the Sibelius "Add and remove instruments" menu.

  • Sorry, you are right...I actually meant 'slur' and not a 'tie'. I have edited the post in case it helps others with a similar issue.

Everything is working now fine except for this weird combination (slur + tremolo) which is not a valid articulation anyways.

    Thank you

    Anand
