  • Breath Control and your wind liabrary...

Hello, and let me 1st say that your demos of your upcomming liabrary sound simply amazing! I do beleive that this WILL be the liabrary to own! My question however, relates to the playing and playability of the liabrary. I use a breath controler quite often, which allows much expression when playing various synths (Yamaha VL70, Korg Oasys) both of which employ physical models of wind and string instruments and sound very expressive. Will your liabrary have instruments set up for breath control and will they sound and play like a real instrument? I'm seriously considering the purchase of the Orchestral Cube when it becomes available, but would like to know more of your plans and how you might or might not incorporate breath control or other systems to actually make it as though you can actually "play" the giga instrument as you would the real instrument and get maximum "playability" and expression out of it. Thank You!

  • Hi!

the concept of the Vienna Symphonic Library is to give our users instant and easy access to various playing techniques.

Of course we´re using all the possibilities to program dimension-switches via keyboard and modulationwheel.

Furthermore we´re programming "midi-plugins" that manage complex functions in the background of your playing, which will also be controlled by keyswitches.

This means the Vienna Symphonic Library will be keyboard-oriented

We truely believe that if you want to capture the possibilities an instrument offers, there´s no way around recording these possibilities. This means a lot of data, but also no more worries about whether your music sounds authentic, simply because it´s samples and performances ARE authentic!

    Best wishes, Paul

  • Hi Paul, and thank you very much for your post. Just to explaine myself a little further... I use a Yamaha breath contoller a BC01 (not a wind controller such as a Yamaha WX5) hooked into my Kurzweil K2500 Keyboard. So actually all notes (Pitch) are played on the keyboard but volume and timbre and articulations are controlled by the use of breath control (BC01). I generally use aftertouch to control vibrato. This arrangement to me makes much more sense than say using a mod wheel or some other real time contoller to change timbre and volume. Since the idea is to emulate a wind instrument, it makes more sense to actually emulate not only its tonal character but also its playing characteristics as well, hence using one's own blowing and breathing techniques gives the feeling that you really are "playing" the real instrument as the player of that instrument actually plays it. Using physical Models of acoustic insturments in this fasion has given me much better and more realistic results than any other method. For example, I can use single, double and triple tounging techniques as well as flutter tounging with the various wind models and sound like I'm actually playing a real instrument. Using your liabrary in this manner would be a huge leap in realism. This is why I pursue my original question a little further and hopefully give you a better idea in what I mean. Thanks!
