  • Programming Human Playback settings in Finale 2014

    Hello,

I`m new to this forum and I thank anyone who can help me with this problem

I would like to adapt the Finale 2014 Human Playback 2014 settings available in the VSL's website for instruments other than those of the "Special Edition" (e.g Overdrive guitar) creating new settings according to my own needs, but this is not working. I've been trying and nothing happens. For example:

    1) I set up a matrix of only three horizontal cells in the Vienna Instruments Pro (respectively from left to right) [Ks C1] staccato - [Ks C # 1] sustain - [Ks D1] Legato.

    2) In the Human Playback Preferences in Finale 2014 I open 3 "New Techniques" (1 for each cell) adding in "Action 1"  their respectives Keyswitches numbers: 24, 25 and 26 and nothing happens.

    How to work?

    I thank you

  • Hello flash75!

As far as I remember Finale doesn't offer guitars in the Human Playback Preferences instrument list. So for changing articulations I would rather use the keyswitch dump file that we have prepared for Finale.

  • Hi Andy, thanks for your reply

So the only way I do I have to change the articulations is to put a Keyswhitch above each note I want to change? Can I not configure Finale articulations (eg slurs) setting them up for the software to the play automatically without having to put a keyswitch above each note I want to change?

I would like to express my opinion. I believe the VSL products are of unquestionable quality, but I think the company needs to pay more attention to the usability of all the library. It is necessary that the VSL is aware that the product marketed are orchestra samples and within that musical universe many people produce music in music notation softwares like Finale. These people are composers and not programers. At the point of view of a composer is unbelieved that I cannot put a staccato mark above a note and the Finale do not play it with the staccato articulation of any instrument in the library and, besides, I have no option to do so. And it gets even harder to accept, as the company has provided this feature to the "Special Editions" instruments. Why not extend this resource to all? The VSL is an international company that sells high-value products and, of course, it has material resources and a team of professionals who could easily develop such items.

  • Hello Ricardo!

We didn't develop Finale Human Playback Preferences for our bigger instrument collections, because we believe that the Human Playback system isn't suitable for it. Our instrument collections offer far more articulations than are available in the Human Playback list of articulations. So only a fraction of the included articulations could be available in Human Playback Preferences. That's why we offer the keyswitch dump file. You can trigger every articulation this way. If you would work with a DAW software (which most of our users do), you would also have to add at least one keyswitch (or Control Change command) in order to change articulations. So that's a pretty normal procedure.

  • You can use both approches together. Setup HP Preferences for the articulations available there, then use the KS dump file for others.

  • Andi and Bill, thanks for your reply

    Bill,

The point is that I cannot program the most common articulations - legato, staccato and sustain - in the Finale Human Playback settings with other than the "Special Edition" instruments. I tried to do it and failed (in my first post I detailed how I tried to do). If I could do it my job would be considerably easier, since 90% of my musical phrases are composed of at least one of these articulations. Having done so, it would be perfectly acceptable to use the keyswitches for the most idiomatic articulations.

    Andi,

I don't think I made myself clear. What I proposed was simply to extend the most common articulations available on "Special Edition" instruments to any of the instruments of the library. I just only wanted that VSL extend a feature that has already been developed previously to all traded instruments. Why not write a slur on a musical phrase in Finale and any instrument of the library (capable of) just play the patch legato? I do not think it would be so hard to VSL do this. Well, that's just my opinion, but I do believe that a large company would do everything possible to meet the desires of more of its already customers, as well as look for new prospects that certainly would be attracted to use a library that offer the most features and possible facilities.

  • I'd recomend just using the supplied VSL Presets. If nothing's happening you're probably in the wrong octive. What instrument were you reffering to in you OP?

    Action 1: KS for x-axis

    Action 2: CC for y-axis

    Action 3 Dynamic Vel+Expression

It's also good to create you own VSL HP preference withou any of the Garritan included.

  • Guitars are not included in the Finale Human Playback Preferences instrument list and it seems to me that the "Any instrument" option doesn't work when other instruments are defined in the list. So as far as I know it's not possible what you wish for.

    Best,
    Andi
