  • First use of MIR Pro

    Hello everyone,

I am going to use MIR Pro the first time and I need a hint, please.

Without MIR Pro I used VSL Powepan, Equalizer, Exiter, Master Equlizer in each track and Convolution Reverb, Hybrid Reverb for a groups. A common sense tells that I do not need most of them by useing MIR.

Should I introduce to MIR a dry sounds or?

    Hi Gukas,

by mistake, I just deleted a nicely worded, lengthy reply I wrote to your inquiry (it's simply too hot in Vienna these days ... the ridiculous 35 to 38°C take their toll ... 😛 …). I'll try to keep it short now. *sigh*

MIR Pro is meant to be used as virtual orchestral hall (or studio), set up readily for a (virtual) recording session. It will take care for all aspects of spatialisation, which encompass panning, positional information, reflections and reverb. I wouldn't make a rule out of it, but for starters*) this means that you can leave out all devices you would usually need to achieve these acoustic impressions (i.e. panners, reverb engines, delays etc.).

But much like in case of a “real” recording session this doesn't mean that the hall will “magically” fulfil all your artistic and/or aesthetic wishes! Keep in mind that you are now in the position of some kind of “omnipotent” conductor. 😉 You are the “ears” of all musicians on stage, so you will have to take care to balance their interplay which they would otherwise take care for themselves. Technically this means that at some point you might want to employ additional processing like compressors, harmonic enhancers and (most notably) filters and EQs – both to the individual instruments as well as the actual mix you achieve with MIR Pro.

MIR Pro tries to lend you a hand in doing so: The so-called “Character Presets” give quick access to a collection of tailor-made “colours” for most Vienna Instrument.

… I compiled more hints like that in a dedicated section of MIR Pro's manual, called “Getting 'that' sound”, on p.55 ff.

*) Once you are more familiar with MIR Pro and it's possibilities, you will of course encounter situations where some these processors might come handy again.

    Hope that helps!

    Kind regards,

  • Hello Dietz,

Thank for feedback. I'll go deeper then.

  • Hello  Dietz,

As I am using 3 instances in a project with 3 multi-timbral(16)parts, I'v opened the 1-st instance -Woodwinds and opened MIR in each track. After selecting venue and reselecting instruments I saw Woodwind group on a stage. Fantastic. I went to 2-nd inatance-Percussions and realised that I'm going to have a new  MIR and must do all again. What I'm doing wrong?

  • I'm not sure that I understand your question.

Yes, it's true, ideally each and every single instrument will use its own MIR Pro instance, which will appear as MIR Icon on the stage of the chosen MIR Venue. But you shouldn't see more than one Venue ... in fact it's not even possible to see more than one as long as you're using MIR Pro's plug-in version (opposed to the VE Pro-based full version).

    Please specify ...

  • Hello Dietz,

OK, I'll ask differently. How to settle all my instruments from 3 instances in one stage of MIR as each of 3 instances has its one Mixer? To see all of them together I shorten them to have a room in VE Pro 5. As far as I have 3 instances with a different names: WoodWinds/ Percusions/Strings I open Woodwinds Mixer and select MIR. To introduce MIR in Percussions instance I have to open that Mixer and do the same and so on...

All my instances start with VE Pro Plugin MIDI in 1---ch.1...... to 16

WoodWinds  VE Pro Plugin MIDI in 1---ch.1...... to 16

Percussions  VE Pro Plugin MIDI in 1---ch.1...... to 16

Strings   VE Pro Plugin MIDI in 1---ch.1...... to 16

If I do MIDI in 2/MIDI in 3.... it doesn't work in Logic X.

  • Oh, now I understand. :-)

In principle, MIR Pro should be seen as the "mixing frontend" for your virtual orchestra (... "MIR not just anther reverb!" ;-) ...). Usually you would use one main window of MIR Pro to see the whole setup at a glance. Most DAWs offer the possibility to use more than one MIDI Port with VE Pro (which allows for up to 256*16 channels, if I remember correctly), so that's easy to achieve, normally.

If you really want (or have have) to use separate instances of VE Pro for each instrument section, you can always copy the "engine settings" of MIR Pro manually from one instance to the others, using the "File > Vienna MIR Pro > Save/Open"-dialog from the main menu. That way the chosen Venue and all its related Output-settings will be identical.

... you will have to setup each instrument individually in any case, so the only real disadvantage in your scenario is that you can't see all instrument icons simultaneously.

    HTH,

  • Hello Dietz,

Thanks for a time spending for me.

Realy, I don't want to use separate instances of VE Pro for each instrument section. My question was how to settle all my instruments from 3 instances in one stage of MIR. What should I change in a Logic X or in VE Pro 5 to have what I realy want=One Big Stage of MIR with one Orchestra

  • I don't use Logic X, but I seem to remember that there are ways to have multiple MIDI Ports for AU-instruments. In that case you could simply merge your VI Frames (using the "File > Merge Projects" command from VE Pro's main menu) into a single big one to see all MIR Icons in one MIR Venue.

  • Thanks Dietz,

    I'll try.
