  • problems with "short" strings patch in Sibelius 7.1

when first trying to set up the Vienna Ensemble Plus configuration, I had a number of problems which I mostly managed to resolve now. However there is one that remains a complete mystery and that is the behaviour of the string articulation "short". Two basic questions:

    1. If I assign this to a solo string, it seems to work ok. However, nothing happens with orchestral violins. I though it had actually been working at some point in the past but doesn't now. Note that I am not mixing different string libraries, only using the standard "orchestral strings" and that I am testing within the same score to eliminate other variables.

    2. The VSL Ensemble Special Edition Plus soundset has, unless I'm very much mistaken, absoutely no +short entry. So how can it actually work at all? I can't see how it can help having it in the dictionary when there is no corresponding entry in the soundset.

One final point -- can Andi or someone please confirm that the current Plus soundset is from 24/09/12? Many thanks!

  • Hello David!

The sound set "VSL Ensemble Special Edition PLUS" comes with Sibelius and is an older version. Please use the sound set "VE Special Edition PLUS" that comes with the VSL Soundset Installer. It includes the "+short" Sound ID you have been missing. The sound set file "VE Special Edition PLUS.xml" that comes with the VSL Soundset Installer 1.0.77 has been modified on July 10th, 2012. The date you see in Finder or Explorer might be different though.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • indeed, Andi -- I can now see the +short on new soundset which mysteriously didn't show on the list of available files in the soundset editor (some refresh issue with the soundset editor browser) at that location though is clearly there when I check in windows explorer As of course the new soundsets have a different name, it was up to me to update my configuration.

Before you introduced the automatic installer which I only fairly recently got round to using, I must have put the VSL soundsets in with the SIbelius ones rather than in with the third party ones in the User folder and this has probably lead to some confusion. It seems to be working now oK though! Many thanks for your help.

PS still don't understand how the articulation could have worked with a solo violin but not with ensemble in the same score using the old soundset but the way Sibelius deals with playback, although theoretically rather clever, does still baffle on occasion.
