  • Midi Channel routing ?

    Hi Everyone ,

    I have loaded VE PRO into my DAW(SONAR)  server interface is A 32/ M 16 /O 32 .

Inside sonar i have loaded 16 midi channels . all good so far

inside VE PRO i have loaded Kontakt 5 , what  i need to do is assign those 16 midi channels in sonar to the 16 instruments in  kontakt .

Now before i go any further all the midi channels in sonar are all outputed to vienna ensemble pro 1 , and each midi channel output number is vienna 1,2,3,4 etc .

So back in VE PRO in the mixer view (kontakt 5) i am having problems trying to connect the 16 sonar midi channels to kontakt .

    All the 16 kontakt instruments are outputed as 1st instrument Output 1/2 - midi 1  , 2nd 3/4  - midi 2 , 3rd 4/5 etc etc

the only channel i can connect and is fully working  is channel 1 because up the top of kontakt in the VE PRO mixer is the option to set midi in (VE PRO Plugin MIDI in 1) and channel ( 1)

If i click aux channels or add a input channel theres no midi up the top in the mixer, ??

What am i missing here ? How do i connect the other 15 channels ?

I appreciate any help with this . because the only way i can seem to get this to work is to add seperate instances of kontakt and add 1 instument to each instance and i know i dont have to , just not sure the final step .

    Regards

  • Hi,

Choose "Omni" as the MIDI channel in VE PRO for all multi-timbral plug-ins like Kontakt.

  • Hi,

I'm new to VEP and have a newbie issue that I know many have experienced yet nothing online or in the manual has been able to address my specific problem.

My sequencer is DP8 and I'm only loading kontakt 5 into my VEP MAS enableed instance.

    Problem:

I've already used 16 midi channels in my 1st instance of VEP 64bit and I'm trying to move to midi port 2 so I can continue to load 16+ more midi channels into the same instance. I'd like to stay in one VEP instance per instrument group.

    Unfortunately,

After inserting a new kontakt 5 instance into VEP and setting the midi port to 1 and the channel to omni and routing it to a midi track in my sequencer that is assigned to output: VEP 1-2: 02-01 I do not get the correct instrument playback. Instead, I hear the instruments that are assigned to my VEP 1-1: 01-01 midi channel.

Now, I've checked the VEP instance settings in my preferences and its set to 48 midi ports and I've got the MAS version of VEP enabled in DP.. Is there a setting somewhere that I still need to enable or maybe something in Kontakt itself..?

I apologize if this has been addressed in previous threads, I just can't seem to find one that addresses the issue where everything seems to be set and channeled properly yet I still get incorrect midi return.

I hope this is an easy fix and i'm just missing something obvious. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've included some screen grabs for reference.

    Thanks

    -Ryan

  • You need to instanciate an instance of the Event Plugin for the next 16 MIDI channels

Dorico, Notion, Sibelius, StudioOne, Cubase, Staffpad VE Pro, Synchon, VI, Kontakt Win11 x64, 64GB RAM, Focusrite Scarlett 18i20, August Forster 190
  • Hi Ryan,

First and foremost make sure you have loaded a vst 3 VE Pro in your daw -(VST2 will not work with more than 16 midi channels)

ok so a little checklist for you and lets pressume that you have loaded a vst3 version in your daw with the ve pro preferences for 2 x kontakt with 16 instruments in each, set the preferences to

    ve pro preferences=      Audio outputs 64 / Midi inputs 2 / Audio inputs 64

1)open ve pro and load 2 x 16 out kontakt plugins

2 inside each kontakt load 16 instruments

    3) in each kontakt rename the midi e.g

inside kontakt 1 ( routing ) with 16 instuments as follows:

    1st instrument) output st1  / midi Ch (A) 1

    2nd instrument )output st 1 / Midi Ch (A) 2

    3rd instrument ) output st 1 / Midi Ch (A)3

and so on for the rest of the 16 instruments in the 1st kontakt ( the 16th instrument will be -output st1 /Midi Ch 16)

    4) now in the second kontakt that has 16 instruments do exactly the same

    1st inst ) st 1 /midi 1

    2nd Inst) st1 / midi 2

    3rd Inst ) st 1 / midi 3

    etc

    etc

    etc

    16th Inst) st 1 / midi ch 16

    5) now in ve pero  >in the mixer >set the first kontakt midi  to 1 / All .

6)Now still in the mixer expand the 16 aux channels by pressing the + (AUX) button ,

7)now change the output setting of the 16 aux outputs e.g out1/out2  then out3/out4 then out5/out6 etc etc until you get to the 16th aux which is out31/out32

    8) now in ve pro >in the mixer still> set the second kontakt midi  to 2 /All

    9) now do steps 6 +7 ( keeping in mind though that the routing for the second kontakt will start at out33/out34 and the 16th out will be 63/64

    ok finished in ve pro

Now in your daw / mine is sonar though they all route relativly the same .

    1) insert 16 midi channels

2 Change the first midi insert  to > vienna ensemble pro 1 / 1 > midi ch 1

the second midi insert to >vienna ensemble pro 1/1> midi 2

and so on until the 16th midi insert should be > vienna ensemble pro 1/1>midi ch 16

ok thats the first kontakt routed

    3) now insert another 16 midi channels into the daw.

    4) 2 Change the first midi insert  to > vienna ensemble pro 2 / 1 > midi ch 1

the second midi insert to >vienna ensemble pro 2/1> midi 2

and so on until the 16th midi insert should be > vienna ensemble pro 2/1>midi ch 16

ok thats the second kontakt routed

One last thing to check in your daw is your audio outputs which are the outputs that loaded when you opened ve pro

just check they are routed 1/2 stereo, 2/3 stereo all the way through to 63/64 stereo .

Once this is done everything should work.

if not please check every step because im sure this is as detailed as your going to get .

    All the Best

  • Hi Bill,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that since I have the VEPro MAS update I shouldn't need to use any Event Plugins..? I should be able to access 48 midi ports from a single instance of VEPro.

    Hi taccess,

I really appreciate the depth of your reply.

    1) This is interesting. Where do I go to see whether my sequencer's instance of VEPro is a vst3 or vst2 version? I don't see anything on the server instance or in DPs preferences... only thing I can see is that I have the VEP MAS plugin enabled on my sequencer, and that I'm connected to a 64 bit version of VEPro. (reference attached image #6 from my OP)

    2) While I do appreciate the detail of your response, if you look at the images I attached in my OP you'll see that I've already routed everything properly at least from what I can tell. It seems to be consistent whith your check list anyway. I have no issues with any midi channels on midi port 1. My issue is that even though my sequencer's midi tracks appears to be routed correctly to the 2nd midi port in my VEP instance, that midi track when triggered is playing back audio from instruments routed to my 1st midi port. And I'm getting zero midi signal from the Kontakt instance assigned to midi port 2 ch.1. I am however, getting midi response from the instruments in another Kontakt instance that are assigned to midi port 1 ch.1...

    I'll reiterate.

DP8 midi track 1 > OUTPUT: VEP 1 - 01-01 > "Playback is consistent with the instruments assigned in VEP to midi port 1 ch.1"

    same for midi tracks 2-16...

    However,

DP8 midi track 17 > OUTPUT: VEP 1 - 02-01 > "Playback is NOT consistent with the instrument assigned in VEP to midi port 2 ch.1... It is actually triggering instruments assigned to VEP midi port 1 ch.1..."

    Hope that is more clear.

Again I really appreciate any help I can get on this one. This tech issue appears to be the last obstacle between me an orchestral template bliss... assuming my computer can handle my greed. ]:)

    Best,

    Ryan

  • Hi Everyone who cares,

Good news. I figured it out and it was simple. I can't believe I didn't try this first...

I was incorrectly setting my "Kontakt instrument's" midi channel to (B)1 for midi track #17 thinking that I had to match its midi port with that of the Kontakt instance's port (port 2). I realize now that as long as the Kontakt instance itself within VEP is set to port 2 ch. Omni (or All) all Kontakt instruments can be routed just like the first 16 channels (A)1, (A)2, (A)3...etc)

Again, thanks for all the help.

  • Hi guys, since I can't seem to start my own thread on the website i'll have to chime in here with my problem.

I'm trying to route 16 MIDI channels from Kontakt through VEP into my MBP. Sounds simple enough!

The problem is for some reason Kontakt won't go beyond 8 stereo outputs, it just stays at number 15/16.

This means that for each instance of Kontakt I only have eight available tracks VEP instance, total crap if you're building a large orchestral template.

Whats the problem here, I thought VEP could handle this? Maybe i'm wrong....
