  • Vienna Ensemble Pro.dll files

Hello, despite uninstalling and reinstalling Vienna Ensemble Pro (ViennaEnsemblePro-WIN-5.4.13741), I then search for the Vienna Ensemble Pro.dll files and they are not found.

However, I can see 6 dll files in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Steinberg\VST2 - this was indicated in the VE pro setup.

In Sibelius, I go to the Play menu, click on Configuration setup, Audio Engine Options, Virtual Instruments and Effects Folder, and add this directory to the list.

    - If I then select this folder and click on Set Defualt, it disppears, leaving only C:\Program FilesAvid\VST Plugis in the list

    - If I click Rescan and the restart Sibelius, there are no Vienna devices at all in the Available Devices list.

I have attached a screenshot of some open windows. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Are you running Sib as 64bit or 32bit? If you're running x64 you need to go to the x64 plugings. The 32bit won't show up.

  • Thanks Bill, can you explain a little more about how to do that, please?

    I'm running Windows 7 64bit, and Sibelius 7.5.1 64bit.

  • Hello Glynn!

The VST2-64-bit plugin on a Windows computer is called "Vienna Ensemble Pro x64.dll". It might have been installed to the following folder on your machine:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Steinberg\VST2

If you can't find it, simply reinstall Vienna Ensemble Pro and take care during installation where the plugin gets installed.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Thank you Andi, I managed to get this sorted out, but I've come back to my project 3 days later and I am now having different problems.

If I launch Sibelius and load the "test.sib" file I was working on, and verify that the "Vienna" playback configuration that I created is being used, the Vienna software does not load and there are no playback sounds.

On the other hand, if I close off Sibelius and launch Vienna Ensemble Pro, and load my "sibelius" project, the sounds that I set up load into VE Pro, and I can hear them by using the VE Pro keyboard. But when I launch Sibelius I see the "Audio Engine Error: Bad Settings" error message.

I did delete the PlogueEngine and Playback configuration folders in Sibelius, and created a new "Vienna" playback configuration, but the same problems occur.

  • Hello Glynn!

Please note that normally only one audio application can use the ASIO driver. If you have VE Pro standalone running and try to open Sibelius, the ASIO driver is already taken by VE Pro. That's why you get this error message.

When working with Sibelius, I recommend using the VE Pro plugin and NOT the standalone version.

If your "Vienna" Playback Configuration doesn't produce a sound, I would follow the signal chain in order to see where the problem comes from.
    - Is Vienna Ensemble Pro activated and connected to a VE Pro Server?
    - Are instruments added inside VE Pro?
    - Are VI presets loaded inside the instruments?
    - Do the instruments produce a sound? This can be seen on the volume meter in the upper right of the instruments.
    - Are the instruments routed to the VE Pro Master Bus and is the Master Bus routed to Out1/Out2?
    - Did you set up the correct Audio driver and output in the Sibelius Audio Engine Options menu?

    I hope this helps.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • It definitely helps a lot Andi, mny thanks.

My next question is this: If I have for example 4 horns, each playing on its own stave, how do I assign the same sample sound to each stave? At the moment I am doing this while giving each stave a separate midi channel, but because they are all trying to use the same sample, I only hear one note at a time. Can you provide the solution please?

  • Hello Glynn!

For every instrument in your score you will need to reserve a dedicated channel on the Sibelius Manual Sound Sets page and in Vienna Ensemble. So if you have four Horn staves, you will need four channels for the Horns as well. If all Horns play the same note and articulation, you might want to switch to the Horn ensemble that's also included in the Special Edition Vol. 1. How to do that is explained in the "Optimizing Sibelius Playback" manual, page 20.

Further help can be found in the Troubleshooting chapter of this manual.

  • Thanks, I will try this shorty.

It seems there is an order to launching the various programs? After I reboot, do I launch Sibelius, then Vienna Ensemble Pro Server with the saved (metaframde), and then the three instances of Vienna Ensemble Pro where I have saved my matching instrument configurations...

...or is some of this supposed to happen automatically?

I apologise for all of these questions but every time I make progress, a different element seems to go wrong.

  • First open Vienna Ensemble Pro Server, then open Sibelius. When you load a score with the associated Playback Configuration, all instruments and settings in Vienna Ensemble Pro are loaded with it.

  • Ah yes, you're correct! It seems I was pressing Play in Sibelius too soon and it was crashing, because the sample files had not completed loading. How can I know when they're ready?

  • If you click on any instrument in VE Pro, you can watch the loading progress at the top.

    Andi
