  • Sib. 7.5 & Special Edition + : sustain triggers col legno in another patch

    Hey there,

I really love the way VSL integrates into Sibelius and am using Sibelius as my primary composing tool because of it. Pleasantly surprised in the way it works and sounds!

However, using the solo strings shows some really strange behaviour: when no slurs or technique text is used, they should play sustained notes. However, they switch to col legno notes... in another patch! (Namely, the ensemble patches for those instruments). Startles me every time, and I don't want to add technique text to every note just to make it play right.

House style is loaded, and the correct instruments added in the score. I would love any input =) .

    Hello mistertheman!

    Welcome to the Forum. 🎵

Such a problem can have different reasons. Please check out the Troubleshooting section of the "Optimizing Sibelius Playback" manual. In most cases you should be able to find a solution there.

If you need further help, please let me know which sound set you are using, which instruments you have in your score, which programs you assigned on the Manual Sound Sets page and which VI presets you have loaded.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hi Andi,

Thanks for responding =) . I've read the optimizing PDF, but the problem unfortunately wasn't resolved.

I have the SE1+ Strings, the other instruments are the regular SE. I configured the usual orchestral instruments distributed over 2 instances of VE. Solo strings are in another instance than the Orchestral strings. Only the solo violin/cello sustain patch is played back as col legno in the violin/cello ENSEMBLE patch... really weird. Another project, using all of the orchestra, doesn't have any problems, except for the solo strings.

I use the Sibelius presets in VI, and the only instruments in the score are piano, solo violin and solo cello.

I look forward to your suggestions!

  • Unfortunately you dind't provide all information I was asking for. So I can only guess.

Maybe you have the ensemble strings in your score. Please note that articulation changes for the Solo Strings will only work correctly, if you have the Solo Strings (Solo Violin, Solo Violoncello) from the Sibelius Add instruments menu in your score. The instruments Violin 1, Violin 2, Violoncello are for Ensemble strings.

If you need further help, please also let me know which sound set you are using, which programs you assigned on the Manual Sound Sets page and which exact VI presets you have loaded in Vienna Ensemble.

    Best,
    Andi

  • I'm sorry:

    Instruments:
    Piano
Solo Violin (Appears as "Violin" on the sheet music)
    Solo Cello (Appears as "Violoncello")

    VE1:
    "VE Special Edition PLUS"
    1. Flute
    2. Oboe
    3. English horn
    4. Clarinet
    5. Bass clarinet
    6. Bassoon
    7. Contrabassoon
    8. Trumpet
    9. Tenor trombone
    10. Bass trombone
    11. Tuba
    12. Violins Orchestral
    13. Violins orchestral
    14. Violas orchestral
    15. Celli orchestral
    16. Doublebasses ochestral

    VE2:
    1. piccolo
    2. french horn
    3. french horn a4
    4. trumpet ensemble
    5. bosendorfer
    6. celestra
    7. glockenspiel
    8 xylophone
    9. timpani
    10. Tubular bells
    11. harp
    12. solo violin
    13. Solo viola
    14. Solo cello
    15. Solo doublebass
    16. percussion

Instruments loaded are the corresponding patches from the 'Sibelius' folder. Strings are all with a +, other instruments are not as I only have SE1 and SE1+ Strings.

  • I have seen in our records that you have registered the Special Edition PLUS content for Vol. 1 Strings only. So you can use the Special Edition PLUS sound set for the Solo Strings, the Orchestral Strings and for instruments where there is no PLUS content (like Piano and Percussion). For your other instruments, please use the Special Edition sound set.

For the score you have written about, I would use a much simpler Playback Configuration. You only need one Vienna Ensemble instance with the Special Edition PLUS sound set and three channels (Solo Violin, Volo Violoncello, Bosendorfer).

As mentioned in my previous post, you might have the wrong instruments in your score. I would add the Solo Violin and Solo Violoncello from the Sibelius Add Instruments menu. Then cut the content from your old staves to the new ones.

    Best,
    Andi

  • Hi Andi,

I'll reconfigure the sound sets and see if that will help for the larger setup. I have just experimented with a smaller setup and that solved the problem for the small score.

    Thanks for your help!
