    I have a question about how VSL libraries handle the interaction between these controllers.

    I have 2 VSL patches, one a piccolo and the other a tuba. The controller map assignments are the same for both:

    Volume: cc 7

    Expression: cc 11

    Velocity XF: velocity

    In the piccolo sound cc 7 does nothing at all, and cc 11 controls volume. In the tuba sound both cc7 and cc 11 affect volume.

    I know in some other libraries cc7 is used as a sort of master volume control, e.g. a ceiling for the loudest passages, and within that cc11 handles detailed fluctuations.

    Any clarification would be welcome.  :-)

    CC7 and CC11 are not patch specific. They work the same on all patches within an instance of Vienna Instruments. What were you doing when you came to a different conclusion? Maybe there was something specific that caused you to think that this wasn't the case. Did you load both patches in the same instance?

    In this instance of VE Pro I have 16 different instruments (on different midi channels of course), including the tuba and the piccolo. What is puzzling me is precisely the difference in behaviour when the settings are the same.

    OK, well as a test, start a new instance of VI in your DAW, outside of VEP (to remove it from the equation) and load both Piccolo and Tuba just to check that the settings somehow are actually different. Do they behave the same way? If so, then you have different settings in your VI instances.

    Thanks for your idea. :-)Interesting test, although the results are still puzzling..

    In VI (pro) cc 7 does nothing in either sound.   But it IS assigned to volume in the controller map in each. (And both piccolo and tuba are already in the same instance of VE pro in my file.)

    I just also tried assigning expression to NONE. But cc7 still does nothing (in VI).  

    I'll try other libraries to see if it works there. Odd ....

    Problem solved. Turns out you have to enable automation in DP. Now it's fine.  :-)
