  • Legato notes don't always sustain in older libraries

In most of the older legato presets, when more than two legato notes overlap a little, as they should, the last note won't sustain for longer than a few seconds. The more recent instruments such as the new clariinet don't have this problem. Is there any way to solve this issue? Thanks.

  • The notes sustain the length they were recorded and the reason they are too short is that they aren't looped. The solutions are:

    1. xFade to a sustain
    2. Use a sustain rather than a legato note
    3. Leave a little gap between the notes, cover it with the sustain pedal

With 1 you have to watch for chorusing on the xFade. With 2 and 3 you lose the legato transition, but get a note of the length that you want.

  • Thanks. I could use another library, but I still haven't heard any woodwinds that are as musical as VSL's, even after all these years. Too bad they don't fix this. The woodwinds are what put them on the map!

What I usually do to solve this is record the part to audio, then adjust there. Sometimes use Melodyne too. Time-consuming yes, but it works the best.

  • Hi Gary,

You will also find a legato variation with sustained notes in the "98 Resources" => "03 Speed Variation" folder of all instruments.

  • Hi Paul,

Thanks, that's a great help. I can use those variations in a key switch to fix the problem notes. The only issue with the resources presets is that it looks like the looping comes in so soon after the initial attack that it causes a audible jump in these sound. But for a note or two here and there, it's a good thing. Best!
