  • Upgrading to Mir Pro mid-project

I am about to begin a project (using Digital Performer and East West instruments).  I'm linking two machines with Vienna Ensemble Pro 5.  I plan to use reverb from Mir Pro.  However, at this time, budget constraints are delaying the purchase of Mir Pro.  So, by the time I'm able to upgrade to Mir Pro, I will be well into the project.

With that said, am I able to upgrade to Mir Pro mid-project, when I already have a large arrangement within VEPro 5?  Is there anything I should consider at the onset of channel configuration in order to make the upgrade transition to Mir Pro during mid-project easier?  Or, is it going to be as easy as upgrading and a Mir Pro channel will be added to the massive template with VEPro?

    thanks

  • Well, a couple of things. If you mix while you write, I mean unless somehow this is completely compartmentalized, chances are good that getting rid of your extant reverb(s) replacing it all with MIR Pro is going to result in a lot of time rethinking everything. And there would tend to be a learning curve.

  • Prior to the upgrade, I would refrain from adding any reverb.  As far as learning curve, from what I've read it doesn't seem too difficult other than adding and placing the instruments within the virtual sound space.  But, yes, I could be very wrong and I appreciate your emphasis on that.

In either case, you are saying other than being faced with potentially time-consuming adjustments, a mid-project upgrade, from a software installation perspective, is a viable option?  It will not interfere in any way with the existing channel layout but rather simply be added as a new Mir Pro channel?

Technially, adding MIR Pro to an existing VE Pro setup is as easy as adding a plug-in to each channel. Still I wouldn't do this in the midst of a project as MIR is not just "another reverb", but a different approach to spatial mixing in general.

I've heard seasoned composers and arrangers say things like "I would have done everything differently", "My arrangement decisions are much more confident now", "Mixing orchestral music has such a natural work-flow with MIR" ... in other words: Chances are that you overcomplicate things by changing your setup before finishing any work you've might have begun already, just because you will want to redo everything anyway. 😊

    Kind regards,

  • Thanks for the input.  This helps a lot in my current decision-making process.
