  • Newbie help ...which product to get

Would like a few basic beautiful expressive VI's; Cello, Flute, Oboe, Violin, Sop Sax....(would Love a Duduk, but that's pretty obscure, I know).

Can someone advise a good starting package for my needs? thanks

  • On one level, possibilities would include some of the download libraries, and solo strings.  But, to really answer your question, more information would be helpful.  What sort of music do you intend to write?  Are you looking to write film music, chamber music, orchestral music, or something else?

Before buying anything, it is helpful to determine what it is you are looking to accomplish.  Depending on what you are looking to do, an optimal solution for one possibility might not be the best answer for a different one.

  • You can hear the style from samples of my latest here: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/tonylauria7 I'm not sure what genre it fits in. Sort of new age 'ish. I'd like to have the variety of real instruments on the next project, but need the VI's to work out what exactly and to test where they might fit.

    Hi Tony

I listened to your music demonstrated by your link.

I propose the Special Edition Libraries Volume 1 and the following.

You probably will like and mostly use the Legato Articulations which are coming with all the string and wind instruments.

    Example 1 (Oboe)

Example 2 (lots of Legatos beside other articulations)

    • 00:00 - 02:17 Solostrings (starts with the viola)
    • 02:18 - 03:02 Chamber-Strings
    • 03:03 - 03:44 Orchestra-Strings
    • 03:45 - 04:34 Appassionata Strings

    Happy Music

    Once mor me, hi

Some instruments are coming with very nice legatos.

For example the ones of Heckelphone:

    Example 3

(beside other articulations: legatos from 00:46-00:54 and in combination with other articulations 00:54-01:25)

  • Thanks for your advice. VSL shows instruments and software under products. My DAW is MOTU DP. Do I only need the instruments? What is the software product? Not sure what the difference is, or if I need both to make it work?

  • If you already have an audio processing environment for your virtual instruments that works well for you, then you don't need the software. However, if you want to profit from specific advantages that come with the software (such as f.e. Vienna Suite's tailored factory presets, the advanced performance shaping/sequence-based composing features of Vienna Instruments Pro or stage positioning using MIR PRO/MIRx), then I would highly recommend getting into software as well.

In my case, getting into VSL software made a huge difference in what I was able to achieve with my VSL libraries.
