  • Repeated notes playback issues with Finale'14d and Sibelius7.5.1

Hi Andi!!! I need your help!

    (anybody else is welcome ;)

    BACKGROUND:

I own Finale 2014d and I'm evaluating Sibelius 7.5.1. My aim is getting a good interaction with VE Pro 5, with VI Pro and VSL SE+Chamber Strings+Dimension Strings.

I'am an advanced user of all the systems and softwares I own and I run them on Mac and PC.

I'm evaluating Sibelius because I got several Human Playback issues in the last Finale versions, never fixed after 2012, and even increasing with the last updates (they are all well known and discussed already in all the communities). I installed the soundsets in Sibelius and the preferences in Finale, and studied carefully all the manuals, tutorials and instructions. So everithing works fine in both the programs selecting right articulations and right dynamic management etc. etc. By the way I get a very nasty playback issue that doesn't seem to be related only to specific set up of Notation software:

    ISSUE:

In both the Finale 2014 Human Playback and Sibelius (but other notation software I own, like Notion 5 as well) the sustain of all the strings Matrices has a strange behaviour: it works perfectly if notes change pitch, but it creates silent notes (missing sounds and no movement in the virtual keyboard of VI Pro) when notes are repeated (consecutively in the very same pitch) at any speed (long or short, fast or slow tempos).

Because it happens with all programs and it seeems to be releated to timing of the retriggered note (e.g. it get reduced or it disappears only if I turn off rythmic feel, rubatos etc.), I'm wondering if you know the problem and you may suggest a solution already.

If you don't I can provide whatever sample, files or details you need for investigation.

Thanks in advance to anybody helping me, happy holidays and happy new year!

    Fabio

  • Hello Fabio!

If some notes with repeated pitch are very short or not audible at all, it might be that the MIDI note off command from the preceding note comes after the note on command from the following note. This way the new note gets choked. To avoid that, you could reduce the playback duration of the preceding note.

    I hope this helps.

    Best regards,
    Andi

  • Hi Andi, yes it makes perfect sense.

I found the source of the bug in Finale 2014d, and it's the "incorporation of the recorded MIDI data" option in Human Playback.

Because notes were not played but entered manually step by step they were full lenght and the random rhythmic feel was creating the problem (the random overlapping is shifting note-off slightly after note-on of following note, as you say). If one let the Human Playback engine manage lenght, the issue is no longer appearing.

Now I have to find a similar solution for the other Notation programs (at least a manual shortening of all MIDI lenght... but I hope something more authomatic...)

    Best Regards

    Fabio.

  • Hi guys!

I'm sitting here with the exact same problem! Finale 2014D, Vinenna Instruments PRO 5 and VSL SE.

Repeated notes of the same note (without any articulation) sounds like one long and the rest short. If I coutinue the pattern in the next bar the first note is long in that second bar, and then short ones again...

Could you describe just a little more in detail waht to turn off to make it work?

    Happy new year!

    Best regards,
    Jonas

  • Please navigating into menu, go to:

    Finale2014/prefernces/Human Playback/MIDI data

here you may select for Continuous Data or Velocity etc. 3 options:

    HP (ignore data)

    HP (incorporate data)

    no HP effect

I fixed selecting "HP (ignore data)" for the "Start/Stop time" function, which is the function changing note durations and position, and it's responsible of unwanted overlapping of note-on and note-off commands.

Dear Fabio, thank you for your detailed explanation! That solved the problem here too. 😊
