  • Questions of Special Edition & Full Libraries

I have purchased all string sections from Special Edition, full libraries of Appasionata Strings, 2 woodwinds as single instruments, I'd like to expend my libraries toward full woodwinds & brass sections. However I have few questions regarding the difference between SE and full libraries.

    1. Are the sample counts identical between single articulation in SE and Full LIbraies? For example, say a legato patch of flute 1 is existed in both SE and Full libraries, are the sample counts of flute 1 legao patch in the SE is the same in the Flute 1 full libraries?

    2. Are the velocity layers also identicle in both SE and Full libraries?

The reason I'm looking at the SE is because the ariticulations in SE are sufficient enough for me to do mock up on all my projects.

    Thanks in advanced.

  • My understanding is that SE libraries are sampled whole-tone instead of half-tone and that legatos for both SE and Full libraries are usually 2-layer samples for both SE and Full but some shorts may have fewer layers in the SE versions.

  • Hi,

    Just confirming Casiquire´s understanding.

Single Note Articulations in the Special Editions are sampled in whole-tones.
Performance Legatos are identical for Special Editions and bigger Instruments Collections.

  • Thanks for the reply. That makes me wanna go for the full libraries instead of SE. I found out the full appaionata libraries sound better and more lush than the one in SE.

    How so?

Half vs. whole tone sampling and the number of short note velocity layers shouldn't have anything to do with the sound or the tone of the library, so I can't really imagine that you're able to hear any significant difference.

I don't have the SE Appassionatas - only the staccato and sustain patches that were included as bonus content within SE Vol2. I do have the full library Appassionatas. I actually did compare both versions of the sus and stacc patches  - with exactly the same settings, of course. And honestly, they sound the same.

  • To me, the note to note transition is smoother in the full library in the long note patch. Anyhow, I'm looking more into the wood winds & brass section. I have Bb clarinet and English horn full libraries and very satisfied with them. However, I'm deciding purchasing full SE 1 & 2, or single instrument.

  • I just purchased the SE Vol.1 and Vol.2 all bundle and I'm extremely happy with the sound of the woodwinds and brass.

Regarding my first post, I now fully understand the difference between SE and Full Libraries. Thanks to everyone for the input.
