I would find it extremely helpful when creating matrices if row and column labels were made available. By this I mean cells to the left of rows and above columns that we used not for sample content but for user-entered labels that could identify the significance of a column or row.
As I see it this would have at least two benefits:
First, it would help with organizing matrices in some meaningful way.
Second, it would help identify the contents of cells. Since we only have four characters to identify a cell's contents, labels could be used to overcome this limitation.
For example, I am currently working on a new string matrix that will group certain categories of playing techniques into rows. It would be helpful if I could label each category to the left of it's row. I could at some point decide I need a matrix which requires column labels instead, or even both row and column labels. Having labels would help me keep my matrix visibly organized.
Also, if I have a row labeled Fast Repetitions, then each cell could be named by the BPM. If I have a row labelled mutes, I could name the cells Sus, Det, Trem and not be confused as to whether these were Long Note patches.
Does this make sense, and would anyone else find this a helpful feature? I realize screen real estate is limited, a consideration that would mitigate against my suggestion.
