    I notice that the preset switch between "Horn triple" and "Horn ensemble - a4" is G1 and G#1. Whilst this is outside of the range of the Horn ensemble, it is within the range of the Horn triple.

    Is this a mistake, or "working as designed"?  If the latter, how do I switch within a channel from Horn triple to Horn ensemble without producing an audible G#1?

    Simply change the preset switches to notes which lie outside the ranges of both instruments.

    Why didn't the creator of the presets do that?

    Lowest mapped note of the Triple Horn is A1. That's already a whole tone lower than the official possible playrange of a horn.

    So there should not be any overlap with keyswitches.

    If you do any additonal stretching of the playrange (which is possible within VI PRO), you have to alter the Matrix keyswitches.
